Don't pay the piglet much mind when it comes to Stanza....an excellent book app by most peoples opinions. Just download txtr for yourself to see the awful app this guy prefers.

We are talking the iPad. So any iPhone sized app is definitely not in the running.

Right now, I think the best reading app that allows you to load your own content is iBooks followed by the best reading app that doesn't allow you to load your own content (other then purchased) is the Kindle app.

iBook is certainly a good app. Even though it's dead easy to convert just about anything to sPub via Calibre, I still prefer my FB2 format eBooks. As such, I have found readMe to be one of the best FB2 reading apps around for the iPad.

As it doesn't yet have a built-in dictionary I work around this on the iPad by just going to a dictionary app (free) and looking up any words I need. A few more steps than having it in the app itself, but unlike most other eBook readers the iPad is hardly cumbersome to switch between apps and look up a word.

I've seen many recommendations for Stanza - yours is the first anti-recommendation. What are the problems for you?

BTW, for reading rtf files, pdf's, word docs and the like -- try GoodReader for a dollar. I use drop box for getting files to and from, no need to sync via itunes. This was a real life saver when I was in 7 weeks of training recently. When I learned they had pdf versions of the books available -- I went looking for a good reader/annotator. GoodReader with DropBox connectivity is a very useful combination.
