I'd say anyone with a cell is going to know what a SIM is as they all have one. just going to depend on how fast they think to yank it. the data wipe feature also depends on your SIM being in there as well. I know if I found a phone, say in a bar, that I thought was a secret unreleased gadget, the first thing I'd do is yank that SIM.

And by the Way he has a point why a monthly fee for such a simple feature. Not only android makes that possible for free Even windows mobile and symbian.
Find my iPhone is just one feature of MobileMe, which also includes all of the email/PIM features and sync, online photo/video galleries and sharing, web hosting, and up to 20 GB of cloud storage in the standard plan. And it's a yearly fee, not monthly.

If having the feature for free is so important to you, go use your WM/Android/Symbian equivalent happily instead of wasting everyone's time with your lame trolling here.

How do they work better?

if you have a mac they are pretty well tied in with mac applications.. preference and data syncing.. address book. calendar. very set it-and-forget-it. not to mention basic remote recovery. android has some, but not all of this. check out the ilife apps if you want more info on how they integrate.

There are other "theft protection" apps out there (for the iPhone) that allow you to remotely lock and/or wipe your device. But they need to be started on the iPhone by the finder/thief and are usually cloaked as games and such.
Only mobile.me allows this kind of remote management that requires no action in the device in question.
Is this possible on android? (This is a real question, not intended to flame. Funny I should need to point that out)

Is this system based on the sim for definite, it seems far more likely that it would work based on the imei which can't be changed so that it would work as long as there was any sim in the device and it was connected to the network.

Actually, it works on the Touch and iPad wifi, so you may be correct.

I was in the Apple Store in Manchester this afternoon and, having read this thread, asked about this feature of "MobileMe". The salesman demonstrated it using his own iPod Touch, which obviously doesn't have a SIM, and the location was absolutely spot-on, so apparently it doesn't require a SIM in order to work.

but if you're using an iphone and not within wifi that you have access to, you'd need a 3g connection.

When an Apple employee arrived at his downtown San Jose home to find that his two iPads had been stolen, he realized the hot-selling tablet could help him track down the thieves.
With a San Jose police officer looking over his shoulder, the employee used his iPhone to watch an icon representing one of his iPads travel through the city, then turn onto Cape George Place.
Police swung into action, surrounding a 1998 Dodge Neon. In the back seat was a slew of hardware including the employee's iPads. Police arrested Francisco Chavez, 31, and Arturo Urrutia, 33, both of San Jose, on burglary and other related charges.
