This looks what I need to do, but am a lowly biologist that is dreadfully ignorant of computer jargon.

If you have the time and are willing, it would be great if you could lead me by the nose through the process.

You can also use Kindelabra for this. It's quite a bit faster than Calibre, as it just reads the files rather than importing all the metadata. My computer takes like half an hour to index all the books on my Kindle before I can do anything. This gets the list really quickly and I can add books by folder rather than manually.
