I'm in the same situation as you. Other people have said that you don't need Whispernet to use collections, but that might be because their Kindles "know" that they're registered.

Guess I'll have to try it for myself.

Yeah, that's what it looks like to me. Give it a try, though. I'm interested to see if you have better luck than me.

Lucky for me, I'll be visiting the States this fall, so at least I'll get collections then.

If your Kindle displays a "non-registered" status on the settings page in the relevant registration info section, then you will not be able to use the Collections feature in the 2.5 update (see below).

Registration (on the device) is only possible through a a Whispernet connection. However, if you have a US Kindle that was pre-registered prior to it being shipped to a place outside the Whispernet coverage area, in that case you CAN create collections. I'm not sure if this also applies to 2.5.2.

Bottom line: your Kindle needs to be 'registered" on the device (NOT on the Amazon website!)

Thanks for that, Sheikspeare. I guess it's a reasonably safe assumption that what applies to 2.5 also applies to 2.5.2 (in this regard).

I'm sure we can go a step further than mere assumption. First-hand verification would settle matters.

I like how you can put books into several different collections. So I can put Dostoevsky under "Literature" and "Russian Novelists" at the same time. The collections feature is just what I wanted. I think the font is sharper too. Thanks Amazon.

It's great indeed. Actually it looks like a tag implementation of some sort but it could be a way to sort your books and other materials by folder – something that's been asked for for a long time,
