Depends on the margins and font size. I use a tablet in landscape with 1280 pixels on the long side and I still have to zoom and pan for 2 column technical papers. The DR800 has 1024 pixels on the long side.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

After some more consideration and asking around I do feel like the iPad would suit my needs very well for PDF reading. I figured it might be better to have easy access to the internet as well since I usually look stuff up while reading. Since I think my brain would get strained faster than my eyes when reading mathematics books I don't think it will be any problem. Normal reading sessions are usually 1-2h and that's with a lot of going back and forth between scribbling formulas down on paper and reading.

Will probably get an e-ink reader for regular books if I ever have time to read them though!

And about e-ink monopoly, that's one example of how patents and the like defeats it's own purpose (innovation) unfortunately.

So I just wanted to give you an update.

I went ahead and bought the iPad 64GB, even though I was worried about eye strain etc.
I've spent hours reading highly mathematical PDFs without any eye strain or flow problems at all. I'm not sure how they've done it, but my eyes tend to get tired when reading from a normal screen, but not at all from the ipad.

The seemless page flipping is great, and the responsiveness of the device is very very impressive. Sun glare is pretty bad on sunny days, and it can overheat from being in direct sunlight (it turns off and tells you to wait for the device to cool dow). But personally I never read outside since 99% of what I read is academic papers, and reading math/statistics in the sun hasn't really ever worked well for me, too many distractions

For those looking for a large screen academic reader, I would without a doubt recommend the iPad. I think a lot of you who are in my situation have become tired of waiting for the e-ink manufacturers to get things done and the lack of information.

If you have any questions regarding academic reading, don't hesitate to ask.

Good choice. I find the iPad to be excellent for (indoor) reading myself. Overheating is rarely a problem here in the UK .

I'm still waiting for a large screen device. An Ipad isn't an option for me. The negatives are too many to make it a good buy.

With the lowering of the price of the DX and the availability of a dark gray housing, that one actually came into the picture...

Sweetpea, out of curiousity, what are the negatives for you?

In fact for most PDFs, unless there are diagrams, reading in portrait doesn't present any problems on the DR800. Only two problems at the moment are getting hold of one and uncertainty about what, if any, warranty you might be getting.
