And when will you publish your source code so others can learn from it...? Bit hypocritical to complain about Irex not publishing their sources, but then not to provide yours when requested...!

Crime? Unlikely ... at most a licensing dispute. It's not as if iRex are refusing to release the sources.

It doesn't seem entirely impossible that their development process may not have been very strictly controlled, and GPL'ed sources and non-GPL'ed sources have been mixed up. If iRex have the slightest objection to release their own intellectual property in source form, the source tree will have to be cleaned up, 'private' material will have to be tagged as private, as well as new rules for software development introduced. That's not a particularly easy job.

I agree ath, but they have had a lot of time to do it, and they "promised" to have it done by October if I remember correctly...and the October release was already a delayed release...

Hmm technically Scotty is not distributing, iRex is. Meaning, Scotty could retire the attachments of the packages here and keep happy hacking to himself, while iRex has a packaged product in distribution.

Well... As long as Scotty is making the binaries available he's "distributing", and that makes him in as much violation of the GPL as Irex ... (Mrxvt, x48, gnuchess and Sylpheed-Claws are all under the GPL, distributing a modified copy with no src is a no-no)

There's also issues with transparancy... Personally I would be wary of installing these binaries as, while I'm pretty sure they won't brick an Iliad, it would nice to follow through the changes ourselves...

TBH, the main reason I'm asking for source code is educational... It would useful to others porting and writing apps for the iLiad, both at the moment, and when the SDK comes out. (Assuming nothing substantial changes in 2.8, and above)... It would also be useful to have another pair of eyes on the code... We've seen how much there is to be gained from Scotty looking at, who is to say what more benefits we could get...?

As I think some would agree here... There's never a good reason to hide source code...

This is one of the main reasons I haven't bought one yet. Anyone remember the original Newton 100 line? Nice idea, not quite there yet... completely obsoleted by the 2000 line. I still have my MessagePad 2100, and it still works (on ordinary AA batteries, yet). But Apple didn't continue with the product, never got the connectivity really working, there were very few apps for the Newton, etc. And then Apple decided not to bother with it any more. I stopped being an Apple user at that point and didn't come back until they switched their main OS to unix-- that was too attractive after all the stupid PC problems I'd been having.

Argue all you like that the iLiad is merely an eBook reader and shouldn't have to support all these other functions (drawing, HWR, web browsing, RSS feeds...). For the price they want, it had better be able to do more than just display PDFs. I think Scotty1024 sees that. I wonder if iRex does?

You win, no more binaries either, just screen shots.

It is quite a bit of work to do this porting stuff and I'm not being paid to work on it like iRex is. Unlike iRex I have to get the source ready to be e-submmitted to the actual owners.

To compare me in this way, dog me in this way is highly insulting and I'm fed up.

Adios.

How is requesting source code "highly insulting" and "dogging"...? I was under the impression you were going to do this anyway to help speed porting of software to the Iliad... I repeated the request as you did not reply to either of my posts, so I assumed you were too busy to seem them...

Btw, as far as I am aware there is no obligation to contact the original creators though obviously its courteous to so...
