However, a lot of those who couldn't get to the Kindle played with the Sony Readers that were in the aisle, right next to the Kindle encap. I know I spent a little time playiing with the Pocket Edition. The Sony display is live devices, with a video loop for each one. |

Here in St Louis I saw a Kindle on display last night. It was kinda funny, both me and my girlfriend said at the same time that it was kind of a design and that we preferred our Sonys. I was surprised how thin it was, given the other additional size.

So, here's my Kindle-Chez Target experience.
After we found our way to the Electronics department, I had to search for the "Electronic Readers," as the sign said. They had only two Sony's on display. I snooped around a little, and was finding my way out of the area When an employee made eye-contact with me and offered assistence!! After briefly recovering my shock, I asked about the "Amazon Kindle eReader," noting that it was supposed to be on display at Chez Target "today" (that being Sunday, 6 June AD 2010.) The employee expressed surprise that is was supposed to be that day, and noted they hadn't received a display as yet, only the Kindles and cases for them. He made a point to look up the price ($259) and repeat it to me a few times. He supposed the display would be "set up by a rep. from Amazon or something." Well, kudos to that young person for doing his job. He actually initiated a conversation with me, he knew what I was asking about, but also knew he was restricted from bringing it out into the open. (I worked in retail for over 10 years, I was not about to challenge the little authority he had an demand he bring the product out.) |

They just kinda reorganized that area here when they added the display, getting rid of the old glass cases that the games were in. The kindle display is on an end cap, and the sony's got moved to the far end of that aisle (used to be right at the beginning of it).

I've been wanting an ereader for quite a while. Picked up the Aluratek Libre thinking I'd like it since it does not have the 'black flash' between page turns. But, I hated it. Only cost $139 and with good reason. It is supposed to be able to read epub but it freezes up for, literally, 30-60 seconds between pages. (sometimes longer) Does great with .txt files but all my books are epub and I do not want to convert them all.
So, it is between the nook & Kindle and I hope I can get used to the black flash. I've played with the nook quite a bit but I really want to compare it to the Kindle. I drove 20 miles to Target the day after the Kindle was to be displayed. There was a sign up on an end cap but it was partially hidden by another product on the shelves. I asked someone who works there and he didn't know the Kindles were even supposed to be out yet. He brought one from the back but it was in a brown box. Didn't help me much and he didn't want to open it because if I didn't want it they couldn't sell it. I asked him what the difference was in me buying it then returning it if I didn't like it...? Still wouldn't open it for me. He also said the same thing someone else posted on this thread... the company's sales reps will come by if they want a display set up. I left there very, very frustrated. Maybe I'll just stick with my iPod touch and wait until a company comes out with an ereader with a backlight. 90% of my reader is at night anyway. |

Endcaps at Target are generally set by a specialized team member over each department.
At times special reps come in to install the displays, however the kindle display was sent to stores via UPS and then just has to be screwed down to the shelf and plugged in. It should have been put out by the person setting the endcap (assuming it's already arrived). |

I found a Target nearby that had the Kindle display. Unfortunately it's busted. It looks like the screen broke; it has a fractured image on it.
