Sadly progress can be very slow. People slowly perceive a need. Solutions are attempted. Solutions are found. Refined. Become common place.
Canning is a perfect example. Problem - food rots. Many solutions were tried. Not all good. As best as I can recall there was a sailing ship trying to find a way over North America. It had a large supply of lead sealed metal cans. The lead is suspected of causing lead poisoning and dementia in the crew. They all died in the frozen north. 10 years from now we'll be reading from multifunctional readers with unbreakable screens. We'll probably have paid $100 for them, but that $100 will be equivalent to $30 today. If we're lucky, that is. ![]() |

Thanks Gwen...I love the science of glass making. it's quite fascinating so Gorilla Glass is an amazing revolution of the evolution of glassware. It's sort of like vehicle tires. It has been possible to make tires which essentially never wear out and still provide traction, but waaay back when, I believe it was Goodyear, decided they would make them softer so people would need to buy new ones more often. It was sort of a sea change in manufacturing and craftsmanship...companies began wandering into the whole area of planned obsolescence but w/o the look of it being intentional.
BTW...my favorite piece of glass is from about 1820-1840ish during a period when mass production of glass was just becoming a possibility. It has amazing clarity and quality only it is very brittle though strong. oops...I wandered OT...I do that...sorry. ![]() ![]() And now we almost have that mythical "transparent aluminum" of Scotty's that emellaich mentions!! |

I'd advise that you do some research on tires: how they work, how and why they wear. You've fallen for an old myth, a little like the 250 mpg carburetor.

Sometimes you have a problem that needs a solution. Other times, you have a solution that just needs a problem. Gorilla Glass was the latter. |

OT: Tires are fascinating: did you know that they contain from 20 to 30% oil; that half their weight is carbon soot; that those very sticky racing tires have more oil and smaller particles of soot than hard, long-lasting truck tires? And, you should see them before they are molded and cooked (350F for 10 minutes); they look like soup cans with the ends removed. --- Fun!
Now, back to gorilla glass ;o) Joe |

The glass you showed was beautiful.
I'm intrigued by lampwork beads. Not at all on topic, given the original topic, but since we've wandered... Examples of early Viking glass beads: http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/vikbeads.shtml I particularly love the eye beads and the blue "combed" glass beads. |
