I have to add:

The Crystal Cave (and sequels) Mary Stewart
The King Must Die (and sequel) Mary Renault
Bridge of Birds, Barry Hughart
Cities in Flight, James Blish

The last isn't all that great in terms of cardboard characters etc, but the concept is awesome. The others are all excellent.

Some of my favourite SFF series (more than 4 books)

"The Lost Fleet" Jack Campbell
"Vatta's War" Elizabeth Moon
"Kris Longknife" Mike Shepherd
"Spinward Fringe" Randolph Lalonde

some oldies...

"Barsoom", "Venus" and "Pellucidar" by Edgar Rice Burroughs
"Conan" Robert E Howard

Lots of great books in here. I'll add:

The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. LeGuin

and

Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Pyrdain series. A definite classic!

"The Fall of Ile-Rien" triology by Martha Wells is probably my all time favorite SFF series. It has it all: complex believable characters, some of the best world building ever, great intricate plot. I own it in hardcover but I found it as ebooks on Amazon and Sony.

There are two stand alone novels set in the same world and very loosely linked to the trilogy. "Death of the Necromancer" is out of print in N. America (some unpleasantness with the publisher I gather) and not available in ebook as far as I've found. Too bad because it is even better than the trilogy.

"The Element of Fire", however, is available for free as a download on her website.

Wow, I'd never heard of this one. It sounds great. Thanks for the tip! It seems whenever I think I've covered it all something new like this just drops into my lap.

I hope you like her work. I found one paperback title (not in the Ile-Rien sequence but all her stuff is good) at our library in the late 90's and then tripped across the 1st of the trilogy books, "Wizard Hunters" at B&N. She is one of those mid-list authors who never got enough shelf time -- I swear, it's enough to make you want to punch a publisher.
