Danariel,
What you say might well be a true for a registered Kindle. But if the Kindle has never had Whispernet access, you can't get to the device name (at least, I can't with mine). When you go to Home Page / Menu / Settings, you simply see a message saying that the device isn't registered. There's an option to register it, but you need Whispernet to do that. There are no other options of any kind (unless I'm missing something obvious). |

It's obvious enough that you'd have to be blind to miss it. Well, pooh, sorry I was no help then. Both my Kindles have come to me directly from Amazon, and already registered. In fact, my replacement Kindle that will be here tomorrow (replacing my 1st Kindle that, I just noticed 2 months AFTER the warranty expired, has sun-fade issues - Amazon's sending me a replacement for free even though the warranty is expired!) is already registered to me on my Manage Your Kindle page.
I sure wish you the best of luck! Some folks have been able to get the USB hack to work, and I think have been able to register that way, but that still doesn't get you true Whispernet. Sorry the original owner misrepresented it when you bought it. |

Danariel,
I'm not sure if your comment (about being blind to miss it) is directed to me. If you're referring to my inability to get beyond Home Page / Menu / Settings, then it would be more helpful if you could explain how to do that, rather than making comments that some people might find offensive (I don't). As for your point that "the original owner misrepresented it when you bought it": I am the original owner. I bought it direct from Amazon. I don't have a problem with any of this. I just wanted to point out the limitations of the Settings screen for the benefit of other folk in my situation. If I've got it wrong, by all means put me right. |

Well, if changing the reg info was so easy, I wouldn't waste so much time to decode unix commands and connect Kindle to the internet via USB ![]() There's no easy way to change it without wireless connection. That's why i am asking for help with editing the data with the TELNET connection and editing the reginfo file. |

Mike L, so sorry for the ambiguity! What I meant was, if it's there you'd have to be blind to miss it, so obviously it's not there on an unregistered Kindle. If you followed the instructions I posted, and there's no place for you to move the cursor to to click on (device name or personal info), then it's just not there.
I did start to change the device name on my replacement Kindle today (to Sun-fade 2, pooh!) with Whispernet turned off, and it prompted me to turn it on. I didn't realize until then that Whispernet was required to change it ON THE DEVICE too. With regards to the "Original Owner" comment, I was referring to silt and his purchase of a used Kindle. I think I combined the two of you in my head into one person. I'm sorry the info I posted wasn't the help I hoped it would be. :-( and I'm VERY sorry for any offense I might have inflicted. |

Danariel,
No offence was taken, I assure you, and no need for any apologies. I simply said that some people might find certain remarks offensive, but I didn't. Anyway, we clearly agree on the main point, which is that you can't use the Kindle to register itself unless you have Whispernet. Personally, I've never found that too much of a problem, but others might. |

Apologies if I missed something, I just scanned this thread.
This is the hard coded method: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70739 Of which there is a simpler version for those not familiar with terminal commands and vi editing: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87686 |
