I obvious cannot know, but it might be the words "under God" that were added to your pledge in 1954 that are the problem for her parents, rather than anything to do with it being a pledge of allegiance to the USA.

Good point, but knowing this child and her parents......no. It was a downright refusal to pledge allegiance to this country.

While at the same time availing themselves of every opportunity it offers.

It hasn't anything to do with being offended by the national flag. It has all to do with a company which is afraid of alienating potential or real customers. No one besides the company from whom he rents his apartment has complained. This is a problem of the lack of morality in capitalism. Consumer is king regardless of what, since sales is all that matters. So in order to secure future profits, no sale should be lost by the display of a political or religious stance. That at least is their argument.

It's not about anti-american sentiments or anything in that area. Contrary, it's the natural development of a system USA has taken to its heart, regardless of the moral faults of that system. If making a buck is king, then everything else must fade: morality, nationality, religion etc.

The knowledge of other peoples minds and hearts is indeed impressive. You must be an american.

Well I was born here and it isn't as if going somewhere else is really an option as other countries aren't in the habit of just letting you move in. Not that I have any problem with an American flag but if I did I'd still be here either way.

They could find the concept of making children stand up and take a loyalty oath reeks of the days of Joe McCarthy.

I don't know the expression "to have a dog" since english is not my native language.

What I am opposing is that the critique of not being allowed to have a flag in the window has anything to do with america as a bastion of freedom of speech. First of all: America has never been that bastion. Second of all: It hasn't got anything to do with people not swearing allegiance to the flag either. It's all to do with a business not wanting to scare away potential customers. Nothing more, nothing less.

If I'm the troll, what the hell are all these other people in the thread who can't make a coherent argument. 1) there's no attack on the american flag from people living in america, who isn't americans. It's comes from within (the company rules). 2) There's no relation between the current situation and a girl who is not allowed by her parents to sing the national anthem.

I personally think it's a disgrace that people aren't allowed to wave whatever flag they may like (except perhaps the nazi-flag, not sure about that). However the reason they aren't allowed to wave the flag or even display it, has nothing to do with foreign pressure, but everything to do with capitalisms disregard of anything besides what pays the best.

I'm not a fan of his either and I end up doing that with people all the time. From the "he's a muslim", to "he didn't shake hands with people at a diplomatic function", to "he bows to everyone", then there is the muslim stamp he authorized, and his lack of citizenship, and on and on.... I mostly get them from people who blindly pass them on, ironically it is often with a warning that is something like - don't let them pull the wool over your hides.

The thing that pisses me off regarding the flag flying issue is that everyone that said is for purely economic reasons is correct. The association doesn't want everyone to start flying all sorts of flags and banners and making the place look tacky. All it would take is a change to the rules to exclude the American flag from them - unfortunately, as soon as they do that, everyone else that wants to fly a flag will challenge it.

Almost in agreement... but shouldn't everyone be allowed to fly whatever flag they like. Isn't it ridiculous with such prohibitions in the first place?

Freedom of speech and all.

What he said.

Anyway the point I was making was that making a company rule that says you can't display the american flag is stupid, anyone who would be offended by such a display really should find a new country to live in, seeing as you're likely to see the flag a lot. Personally I don't see anything wrong with displaying any flag you like in your window.

Then we are in agreement. My point was solely that the companies enforcing such ridiculous rules are the culprits. There's no need or reason to blame it on the muslim or anyone else.
