My first GP in France had a withered arm, a glass eye, was virtually hunchbacked and was a chain smoker. And he used to bang on at me about looking after myself! He was a miserable character and a found a new doc. I say 'was' because last I heard, he'd died quite a while ago. He was at least fifteen years younger than I am. So it goes. Neil

I remember eating at a pavement cafe with a pal about twenty years ago, when a guy on a motorbike mounted the curb and snatched something from our table. A visiting hit-and-run bandit from Italy, I guessed, as my pal clutched her purse to her chest. He screached to a halt a few yards farther on, removed his helmet and waved my packet of Bensons in the air. It was my local doctor. Now that's how to make a point with Mediterranean-style! Salut. I just tried to Google up the source of the world famous quote: "Excess in everything ... moderation's for suckers!" Seems nobody said it at all, not even WC Field or Christopher Hitchens. Maybe it was me, after all. Hoots. Neil

neilmarr, go to the ecigarette forum. Very good info there. For smokers who just can't quit, there's a hopeful and fun alternative. Gives you all you get from smoking except for the tobacco, tar, poisons.

Thanks, Mrmember. I've tried pretty well everything in the past. This time, I'm just going to quietly quit on June 1 and not even mention it to family and friends. I reckon it's the well intentioned advice overload that makes many trying to quit so darned nervous and annoyed that they need to light up to chill a little. Good to have your new company here, by the way. Best wishes. Neil

Niel,
Is the moral of this thread not to take up ebooks. I managed to quits cigs and booze years ago with a bit of a struggle. Since I don't do ebooks now, are you saying that I shouldn't start?

You SHOULD get hooked on ebooks, Barone. To do otherwise is hazardous to your head. You cannot overdose on good ideas and wonderful prose. Best wishes. Neil

PS: email me with your favoured genres and I'll show you why with a few free ebooks from my own wee house. N

This is very interesting, and I did a search for it... Lots of sites, including info on why these are illegal in Australia... Unbelievable..

All the best with it, Neil.

I tried EVERYTHING and only ended up succeeding when I took part in a trial for a new drug that works on addiction in the brain. I've been smoke-free coming up seven years now. One side effect was that I also stopped drinking -- not altogether, but I'm no longer the party girl I used to be.

I had to quit drinking to quit smoking because there were always cigs laying on the bar.

Several people over the years (including my late Mother) have mentioned that I am not as much fun as I use to be .

Anyway it's been 23 years, 48 days, 12 hours ....
