Thanks for all the input guys. I have decided to stick with the 505. I figure it's working great and I know how to work it already and all I do on it is read novels. The Nook is tempting because of the cover browser alone for me but other that it seems too heavy and kinda awkward to hold when I tried it on at the store. I think I am going to use the $50 to buy the ebooks from BN and liberate them if I know how to do it that is. Thanks for all the advice guys.

The 505 is a great reader. It is the one I use out of my 505, 900 and Kindle2.

My wife bought me the kindle as a replacement. I do like my kindle much more than the 505, mainly because of the annotation features, TTS and 3G (I totaly didn't care about it until I used it). If I just read novels then the 505 is actually easier to use. The kindle is not as small as the Sony, I could put my Sony 505 in my pocket, and because of it I carry it less than I did my SONY. Or maybe it's because I read on my BB when I don't have my Kindle and sync between the two is automatic. =X= |

I think the current nook is going to be old and obsolete before the year is over when devices come out using the better contrast/faster eink screens.

How much faster can you really make the e-ink as compared to now where all of a sudden the whole e-reading world is going to stand up and shout "WOW". The only people who truly complain about the speed of e-ink are the ones who would rather buy an iPad anyway. Until touch screen color e-ink comes out, everythingelse is re-inventing the wheel and does nothing to say " I've got's to get me one of those". And certainly won't make the Nook obsolete. I agree with boswd, the nook already has better contrast than just about any other reader ( well all the ones I have seen) and the speed of the page change is as good as the top selling brands at the moment.
The PRS 600 is a real pain to try and read from after you have used a nook, on the other hand the prs 600 feels more robust, but I feel reading is the most important thing here. Remember B&N have the nook2 coming out before Xmas and I would bet in two to three years when the colour screen hit the market there will be a "nook colour" version. |

I like the nook's forward and back buttons that don't necessitate using your finger to flip the pages on the screen, but if you're happy with the 505, go for it! Everyone has their own opinion and uses for their ereaders. (And the nook doesn't have bluetooth, just to clarify--just 3G and Wi-Fi.)

Great thread.. I am contemplating these exact two devices and wanted to join up to say thanks.
There's a 505 on our local craigslist with a leather case for $100 and while I love hacking Android i think the cheaper option is best for me at the moment. Last edited by dontpanic; 06-03-2010 at 05:28 PM. Reason: formatting |

For those of us who need to read one-handed (public transport commute, while nursing a baby) weight and ergonomics are very important. Weight is also an issue for those who are used to reading on PDAs or smartphones. The nook weighs almost 3x as much as an iPhone. I just sold my PRS-700 because holding by the bottom and using the buttons was too unwieldy and gave me hand cramps. I was all set to get a Nook this weekend, until I found the buttons were not great for one-handed use given the weight of the device. If the upper page button was the forward button, I could make it work because I could hold it in the middle ad distribute the weight evenly. But since the lower buttons are page forward, it makes it top heavy. (According to the B&N rep, I couldn't switch the button functions in settings). And that is without adding a clip lamp for night time reading. That can add another 1-5 oz to the top, depending on the light. I was interested in the Kobo because of its light weight, but the blue button on the right makes that a no-go - I need to be able to switch hands. |
