I'm only 52 so I guess I'm too young to actually have witnessed a company actually use this trick. I'll admit I didn't start paying attention until I was around 21.

Really? All you have to do is type in a few words in google search to see all the complaints people have because of this excuse.

Basically, companies and private dealers will do everything they can to not have to spend more money. And this includes making up BS excuses.

I'm sorry, but I do not have the kind of blind faith on capitalists that some people have. I like their products, but I also recognize that it's actually my money they want not my well being.

Can you tell me what to type into google to find these? I'm really interested in looking some of this up.

I'm not referring to ectaco. Just type up something to do with warranty and see people's complaints over the years.

But as I said before, this hasn't happened to me with ectaco, but I don't doubt that they tried this trick in the past if some people have claimed this. Anything to make a profit is in their nature.

It is actually quite amazing what does go on. I did some law subjects for Uni and it was quite shocking just how little I knew about my consumer rights and statutory legislation, and just how companies play on the ignorance of customers not knowing these facts and exploit to their own benefit.

Here is one that has always amused me.

I sometimes get a letter from the bank giving me an "option" to pay my morgage that would save a lot of money on interest. I'm sure most people here have gotten this letter before. Basically, instead of a monthly payment you pay them $400 or so to get into this program to pay bi-weekly. The advantage of this is that over the life time of your morgage payment of 30 years or so you'd save $50k or so on interest. Ok, that sounded nice, but here are several things that most people don't know.

(1) Based on the system, there is absolutely nothing to prevent you from voluntarily make bi-weekly payment on your own to save on interest. Since it's compounded monthly in either case, you can just do this without having to sign up into their program. So, why pay them hundreds of dollars when you can just do this on your own?

(2) If you get into their program, then you are obligated to pay bi-weekly. Any late payment would result in a penalty, and this is exactly what they want. Penalty could be anything from a ridiculously high late fee to an increase in your interest rate. In other words, you're paying them hundreds of dollars so there would be more chances for you to be late on a payment and therefore have to pay them more money.

People actually fall for this legal scam. People actually think it's a good deal when it's really not.

I often have to explain this to people. I really like capitalism because I believe it's the best system that's available. But it's really a love-hate relationship. Just realize that they really do not have your best interest in mind. Money dictates their moral conscience, not your well being.

It happened to me either today. Any news from Ectaco?

I tried all the suggestions on here, and nothing worked. It just froze up and that was that. Contact ectaco and let them know. They had me send it back and they are going to replace it. I sent it on Tuesday and hope to get the replacement sometime this week. I sure hope they have figured out what is causing this and the next one doesn't do it.

Mine too!

EDIT: Well it looks like I was able to recover the unit by holding down the power button and hitting the reset key repeatedly while doing so. Left to its own devices the unit would sit there indefinitely at the JBL screen and never progress beyond it. Reset key and removing batteries did nothing (other than powering down the unit). There is definitely a problem but hopefully this method will allow easy recovery if this happens again. /EDIT

Darn... Mine just froze up the other night and stalls forever at the jetBook Lite screen as well. I've tried removing batteries for an extended time, and of course resetting the unit. Mine has 0.15d firmware out of the box.

I almost wonder if it could be a heat issue because I did read the thing for about 5 hours a night while it was working... Bummer.

I can freeze mine by opening a doc in eReader format and then going back to the main book, picture, etc screen. If I do that and try to go back into books it is a lock up every time. Popping out the batteries or hitting reset fixes it though so its not as bad as the freezes listed above. Basically when I have it in the book library I keep it there to avoid problems. If I need to add new books I power it all the way down first and add them to the SD card.

Haven't heard anything from Ectaco yet, but they received the unit last Thursday. I know because I sent it delivery confirmation. I was told that, as soon as they received my jbl, they would send me a new unit. So far nothing, but I am making allowances because of the holiday weekend. Hopefully I will receive it soon.

I didn't try that. It would come on after I hit the reset button, but would just sit on the logo page. Wonder why that worked? Very strange.
