In the same vein as the O.P. I just saw this headline:

At least in forums, I think people get defensive about <insert product name> because

A) They don't have one but really want one but can't quite justify the cost so they're trying to convince themselves why they "really" don't want one
B) They have one and spent the money and it's too late to return now and have to justify the cost
C) Some people really do like it and just have no toleration of other peoples' views and posting on a forum makes them somehow feel more powerful at least in the virtual anonymous world. i.e., they wouldn't be getting into troll wars live with other people!!

Nope.

That's what makes me not want to get an Apple product - the over-zealousness of its fans. I'm always suspect of unquestioning devotion.
I don't get waiting in line, either. I wanted an iPad and expected to wait till the craziness subsided. I happened to be in Vegas when my husband (a Microsoft guy, lol) mentioned the iPad launch at dinner. I found out there were three Apple stores, and I called the one at a casino-resort, which I figured would be less mobbed than those at malls. That Apple store was open till midnight, and the guy said they still had a few 3G 64gb models. So I went and bought mine in under 10 minutes, late at night. There were still a bunch of people in the store, so I didn't even try the iPad. I figured if it didn't work for me, I could resell it and avoid the restocking fee.

Getting stuck with an iPad isn't a problem; you can sell them on eBay and Craigslist for hundreds over retail.

I was not at all interested in the ipad. I have a netbook and my kindle is my 3rd e ink reader. Then I bought an ipod touch because it can act as a control for my itunes library to be played via my mac mini on my HiFi.

Then I discovered that the touch can load apps. Now I read on it as well. It goes everywhere with me. I have cancelled my Time subscription. It is much better on the touch. Would I like to have an Ipad? Hell yes.

I like the iPhone version, which is free for the app, as well as to read. It's in iPhone-screen size, of course, unless you read at 2x, which is grainier. You have to pay for iPad issues, which I haven't done.

For the NYT, I prefer to use the Web site.

I get that the iPad isn't for everyone -- but this story reeks of him wanting to write what he wrote...then bought the iPad just to write a story about taking it back.

Sure, the iPad has TOTALLY replaced my use of the iPhone at home. So what? I don't feel bad about that, I'm glad I have a device that's even nicer as a couch/bed surfing device than my iPhone. Actually, because of the iPad, I'm going back to a dumb phone. I just don't need to spend the $30/mo data plan for the little benefit I get out of it.

The iPad is a bit heavy and awkward at first. Then you put it in the Apple iPad case and it's fantastic. But I had to give myself some time to work with it and find out how to best use it.

I like the guy who brought up the Ferris Bueller quote. It's perfect. No one NEEDS an iPad....but if you can afford it, it's really nice to have.

Unless you are an idiot who feels bad if you like the iPad more than your iPhone.

I find Time on the touch easy to read. It is a great way to read a mag.

I could never give up my iPhone because I really do use the data plan when I'm out, to look up something quickly, locate something on the map, etc. And the apps I have in my iPhone that I use the most are ones I use exactly for the portability reason. They would be loads of fun on an iPad (those that have been modified for it yet that is), but completely unnecessary on a bigger device and not likely to be used all that much, except for the e-reader apps. I have about 8-10 apps as it is that I use regularly, and of that, maybe 5 that I truly use multiple times a week. And all are for quick access on the fly wherever I am. For an at home reader and surfer, I had wanted a convertible form factor with a pen/stylus, so I opted for the Asus T91MT. I think people get so fussy about this stuff. It's all a matter of what works for the person. And articles like what generated this topic are all the more marketing and exposure for Apple anyway, so it probably helps sales!

I can understand wanting to have something new and being the first to try and get it - IF the item is either rare or unique. The iPad doesn't fall into that category. I've just learned in life that what usually follows the "newest" thing improves upon it and gives more value.

The last dedicated games system I had was a Sega Genesis, and I wasn't a first adopter for that (or its games) either. I now play games on my computer, but I don't rush out to buy them on the first day they are released.

Well, that was not what you wrote earlier. You said you won't buy it if people are willing to wait in line for the release.

And the iPad on the release did fall in the unique and rare category. Maybe just not for you. No one exCept apple knows how many ipad's will be available. If it's like the iPhone, there could be shortages. And a lot of people actually wants an iPad for a good reason. I have thought about flying to America that day just to buy it too. Waiting for something for 4 months does that to you.

I didn't have to wait in line for the iPad 3G, but, what is the harm in it? I think a lot of people do it just for the fun of it-same with game consoles. If it doesn't affect your life (unless the line blocked your way to the bathroom ) what is the problem?

I agree. I'm not one to wait in line, but plenty of people wait for big movies to open, Harry Potter books to debut and such. Note the lines at Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter and Lord of the Ring movies, for instance. Does it matter if you read a Harry Potter book the moment it's released? Sure, to some people. They get enthused about things they enjoy, often want it asap and want to share the atmosphere with other fans.

Personally, crowds and lines detract from my enjoyment, so I'd rather delay gratification if a line is involved. I don't begrudge people their individual pleasures, though.

I took my son and his friends to that final midnight Harry Potter book release at Barnes and Noble-it was crazy!
