Happened just the other day but it was an extra weird exchange.

I say, "no, not an iPad. This is a touchscreen Sony e-reader with E-ink display."

I show him my nice monochrome PRS-900, like I'm Vanna White.

He says, "so how much does that iPad cost?"

"Umm, no idea. Like I said, this is a Sony e-reader."

I had it happen a bunch the last week or 2. Yes, before that was "nook thingy" and before that Kindle. Then some woman I work with saw a Cool-er being advertised on the HSN and asked me if my Sony was a Cool-er. Sigh.

I try to avoid letting others touch my PRS-600's display - it may be touch-screen but I need to keep it clean!
Yes, a screen protector for your Kobo is a good idea!

On topic: Actually, I have never been in such a situation. Or I just don't remember.

An easy response is to look at them, give them an arrogant once-over, arch an eyebrow, then turn back to your reader and say with thick sarcasm and condescension, "yes, it's an iPad."

Hint: Don't do this if you already have an iPad. Or rather, I should say, STOP doing it if you have an iPad.

I like the eyebrow thing and the condescension, but I"d go with a simple, "Well, I'm not sure I could explain it to you."

Oh boy, this happens to me several times a day when I use my Kindle DX at high school. I tell them about my iPad that'll be in the mail soon.
