It definitely is a big risk.

So now there is no other seller in the US left except BestBuy? And has anyone tested their blacklist of "known freight forwarders"? Meaning just tried to ship through one of them? They might not have all on file, besides, their addresses change.

Then again, a few months from now (given the current Euro crisis) the European DR800S may be cheaper than the US version!

Taking the risk of missing the device is one thing.
But getting the DR800 in Europe cheaper doesn't sound promising to me. Given the current exchange rate, the US price is about $240 cheaper than here and it has the wireless stuff. I can see that maybe the exchange rate gets worse, but I cannot see making it up a price difference that high.

I forgot the smiley, that was meant tongue-in-cheek. Though only a few years ago the USD was at 0.8 to 1 Euro. Historically, the US Dollar has always moved up and down by 30-50% over 7-10 year periods. Before they had the Euro those movements were against the German Mark. Besides, I wouldn't have to pay VAT in Europe, so an exchange rate of 0.95 would already mean the same price for me.

VAT equals tax!?! If so, you'd allready save 19%. If I could save this much on the device, I wouldn't bother to buy it in Europe (with all the warranty issues if I were to need it).
But for the current exchange rate, I would certainly jump on the savings

I bought a couple of things while I stayed in the US, and all of it still works (my truck, BBQ, PC....). So no warranty issues so far.

I should have thought that you were missing the smiley

I thought there were other resellers, it's just that BestBuy is the biggest one. I don't know if any physically carry it in their stores though, I think they're all online order only.

The only other US seller of which I'm aware was CarToys. But they no longer carry the DR800SG.

The last time I asked iRex was back in the beginning of March. They mentioned then that they had 5 retailers who had agreements in place to sell the DR800SG. I don't know who they are though, or if all of them are actively selling at this time.

Yup, VAT = Value Added Tax. Only European residents have to pay it. Living in Asia service is the same for me in Europe or US (not that I expect any on such a product, except for the pen which has been chewed up by our parrot -- fortunately it is still usable!). And yes, while the 3G is useless now, I am still holding out some hope that some friendly hacker finds a way to enable GSM 3G.

If those mystical resellers existed at this time, why wouldn't they post it on their website?

Good question. I don't think I ever saw anything on their website about Car Toys either. Yes, it would be nice if they published an "official" list of resellers.
