I thought that you had to have a kindle register or a Kindle App like Kindle for BlackBerry, Kindle for PC, Kindle for iPhone. etc.. registered before Amazon would allow one to buy the book.

Are you saying you don't have any of these apps registered and you are still able to buy books?

Under the "Buy now with 1-Click" do you have a device listed in the "Device" combo box?

Yeah I agree a device="the actual kindle", K4PC, K4BB, K4Mac, etc... That is what I meant by "be it a Kindle for PC, Kindle for BlackBerry.... etc" I guess I wasn't clear.

Thanks again. My head is spinning already. It seems that I cannot read the books I paid for. Way to go Amazon/Barnes&NOble (:
I will try to un-DRM my books today. I really don't like doing this. It seems like I have to steal something that I paid for.

You can read them, through the methods they allow/provide (supported readers and PC's). Unfortunately with the DRM the big publishers insist on at this point it's left up to the user to know what will work on their device. Hopefully one day soon one of the big publishers will drop DRM and the others will then follow.

Yeah, it's a pain and it takes some research to figure out. Hopefully one day ebooks will be standardized like mp3s.

I agree with you, I am curious how he managed to purchase a book without a Kindle or Kindle App to read it on.

How did you buy your ebook from Amazon. Kindle 4 PC downloads the files as DRM'd .PRC files. I thought you only got AZW files by having an actual Kindle.

What Kindle or Kindle App do you have that allowed you to purchase a ebook from Amazon?

The second post in this thread told you that the books wouldn't be readable.

You can buy ePubs from virtually any other store without a problem, but to purchase and read books from Amazon and B&N will require you to jump through hoops.

The files I downloaded to my PC were .azw files.

I used following instructions to remove DRM http://nyquil.org/archives/1235-Conv...-Possible.html

The article finally answers the question that you neglected to ever state, So you are using Kindle 4 PC.

I'm glad you have it working.

Yes, I am using Kindle 4 PC. Sorry for the oversight. The kindle books are DRM free now. BN books still have DRM. I am working to get that off. Still seems strange to me that I have to hack to read the book I paid for.

You might try this Google search.

The best method I've encountered for removing DRM from Kindle for PC purchases (PRC files) is detailed here:
http://nyquil.org/archives/1235-Conv...-Possible.html
The resulting MOBI file can be converted to EPUB in Calibre, then transferred to the device (I have a PRS-300) either directly or through the Sony Reader Library software. Formatting is excellent.

It's nice to jump in to help, but you posted the same link that the original poster (in post 21) said he used to solve his problem.

I guess it never hurts to repeat the solution.

Sorry this post provided step by step instructions for removing DRM. That is not permitted on this site and against the law. It was removed.

Last edited by DaleDe; 05-15-2010 at 01:23 AM. Reason: removed DRM instructions.

Now I know where I got that link! Guess I didn't re-read the messages on page 2 of this thread before I posted.
