My opinion? Tough luck. They sell an unlimited data plan at $30/mo, which is about what I pay for my home internet, and I get FAR less from AT&T. They can bite the bullet and fix their cruddy infrastructure.

yup, AT&T leads the pack in dropped calls and customer dissatisfaction.

1. For those that have an iPhone, they can jailbreak it and buy a $9.99 program called MyWi that turns the Iphone into a mobile wifi hotspot.

I just want to confirm this info. Fotoman is spot on correct here; it works perfectly for me.

The new "Spirit" jailbreak is painless and takes mere seconds. You don't need to jailbreak the iPad; just the iPhone. I spent $15 on one 250MB chunk of data through AT&T's plan... I don't expect to do that ever again.

just be aware that you are technically violating your contract with AT&T which currently prohibits tethering to the iphone. if you get caught (there have been no reported cases of people getting caught yet) they can terminate your contract immediately, severing your phone service. just be careful.

That's been the case for most of the past decade - the exact same warning applied back when I was tethering my old SE phone to my Palm Zodiac. As long as you're not trying to run torrents or something, you should be OK.

given how poor AT&T is at managing their network i can't think they'd be watching people's data transfers too closely, but who knows. the only thing that could alert them is that the ipad consumes more data than the iphone. so a sudden increase in usage might tip them off.

that being said, i used mywi just fine in a few airports with my iphone plugged in nearby (since it drains the battery like a vampire). i looked at it this way, if i wasn't surfing on my ipad i would have been surfing on the iphone anyway. my data usage shouldn't have gone up that much.

if at&t could get their network together it wouldn't be much of an issue. and there's also hope some other carrier might start supporting the ipad directly since it isn't carrier locked.

Agreed. Prices of phone data plans are just ridiculous.

And it's why I've never gotten a smart phone. I wouldn't use the internet or e-mail much as I'm usually near a PC, and certainly not enough to pay MORE than I pay for my 12 mbps internet at home ($19.99 a month--promo deal, but I've kept it for years by calling and threatening to ditch cable for satellite when the promos run out).

If it was $10 a month, I might would get an iPhone, Blackberry or Droid phone. Maybe even $15. But not $30. Much less when the service is spotty.

at&t needs to take a look at what other carriers are doing.. Telefonica in Spain sells you a data plan for 39 euro. you can use it with as many devices as you want, they just give you extra sim cards. beats having to mess around with a wifi hotspot.
