the ipad will enver work for me as an e-reader, i get headaches looking at a screen for that long and so does my mum (ineed i cant imagine how anyong can spend hours reading a bright backlit screen like that.)

so yeah i have to stick to e-ink.

will check out the sony reader too. i believe again the prices will work out being a lot cheaper than over here.

Mike L borders on the dramatic... if you just carry it through, and don't act weird, you'll be fine. I wore a pair of sunglasses and a watch (when I still wore them) totalling about 600 bucks through customs. I sure as hell wasn't about to pay for stuff I got on vacation. I could understand a painting, but little things... please...

Sorry to disagree. I know two people who did what Grechzoo is suggesting. They both bitterly regret their stupidity, and are still paying the price several years later.

With regards to buying from Amazon, I've tried just changing my location to USA and adding a US adress as a second adress, and then I was able to buy books at US prices. The 1.99 USD download fee really annoys me - that I don't have the option to choose download via cable only.

I really agree with you here. If the Kindle is out of the package, they have no way of knowing that it wasn't brought over from UK in the first place. Even when my husband and I go back and forth from the US to Japan, the only problem we've had is from beef jerky we tried to bring here to Japan. It's animal product and they had to destroy it. But if we hadn't said it was there then nobody would have known.

OP, maybe you can get the Kindle in the US then mail it back. Then you won't have to take it on the plane at all.

And they will be surprised at how life has utterly changed when they come out of prison and start to rebuild their lives!

SOrry for my bad English but -
in GErmany (where I live) we are allowed to buy for an amount of 430€ in the US and take this with us while "coming home". I think there could be a similar law that allows you bringing the kindle legal back to the UK. So there should be nothing to worry about.
Perhaps you can check this on official pages?
