Someone on the French forum said that you can purchase restricted books on Books on Board if you use gift certificates. You will have to provide a valid U.S. address though (at least valid postal code). You can just buy the gift certificate and use it yourself. I haven't tried it myself and I don't know how long it will work...

Borders Australia is launching their eBooks platform and e-reader on May 19 according to Nate's Blog. Maybe you'll be able to get it from them?

Do what I do: buy another print copy and give it away to a public library. Then download the ebook version from the darknet.

This achieves several things:
  1. You bought a copy of the book, so your money goes to the author... well whatever measly sum the publisher gives them, but still. Your conscience is clear.
  2. You have the ebook version, yay!
  3. You're doing a good deed by donating books to a library. Not everyone can afford to buy new books.

This may not be a geographical issue: HarperCollins' websites weren't selling any new books last time I looked; maybe this not being able to buy Tolkien books is happening to Americans too..
Oh, one thing: the epubreader plugin for Firefox interferes with the Waterstones epub download, and must be disabled.

Finally scratched that itch
Waterstones sold me The Hobbit just fine, thank you very much, for £5.26.
Now why can't HarperCollins make things easier and let me buy in my own currency?

With Australian address and IP address? If so, good for them. Pretty good price, as well!
