I wouldn't completely write off getting at least a refund, or if your lucky a replacement. Don't go through Sony for repair, approach the vendor that you purchased the device from. In the UK the Sales of Good Act states that vendors not makers of the product are responsible for ensuring the product works for amazingly up to 7 years. Im not sure where you hail from but you might have a similar customer protection situation.

Play.com honored this after a bit of enlightenment at 11 months, which is after the 6 month guarentee that they tried to fall back on. I quoted the Sales of Goods act and with a little hesitation they organised for a courier to pick up my device at no additional cost. I even managed to match the cost I brought my reader at (£179) as Waterstones still have a few in stock.

Sounds to me like you had a power spike come through and fry the 505 while you were charging it. An owner's nightmare!

Maybe we should charge our 505's using surge protectors.

Um, I thought I was a bit on the paranoid side because I DO use a surge protector. Now, I feel better about it.

krismcewan, sorry about your 505. I'm very attached to mine and don't know what I would do without it.

You can buy surge protectors which are the size of a large electric plug. You plug it into the socket and it has a socket on the outside into which you can plug the device you want protected. They're very inexpensive.
