Hmm, the last commercial I saw from Microsoft was when Win7 was introduced. Or was that Vista?

I don't know, last year there was a huge media attention because the largest online bookstore started selling ebooks and ereaders. And they say they sold more units than expected. But I still haven't seen anybody with an e-ink device...

I have seen only one more book reader since I bought mine in Jan 2007.
When I was in Mexico, I met a young couple from Spain with Sony Reader PRS-505. That's it. Dominican Republic, Israel, Amsterdam, Vienna, Venice, Antalya, Glasgow, London, Brighton, York...a few more towns/cities in England. No ebook readers at all.
The biggest disappointment was Mexico. A huge resort with approximately 50% of all tourists Americans. I hoped to see at least one Kindle?
It made me think that people don't read that much nowdays The only positive moment was when I flew to/from Israel last Easter and almost every adult was reading a book. Not ebook reader, but reading nonetheless. It was kind of a surprise for me. Have not seen so many people in one place reading for ages (except libraries maybe).

LOL! That made me smile.

I get the "ebook" question quite a bit nowadays, which is better than "is that a computer?" question. At least people recognize that it's a book of sorts.

I'm generally cynical about marketing trends, so people recognising the term "iPad", but not knowing whether a Kindle is one or not, doesn't surprise me. That, as soon as they find out it's not an iPad, they immediately lose interest, without even apparent curiosity about what it is instead and what it's capable of, suggests to me it's more about the perceived image of being an iPad owner than what you can actually do with one.

I was sitting next to a Dutch guy on the plane back from Germany last week and he asked if my Elonex 511EB was an iPad. He seemed comfortable with the idea that it wasn't actually an iPad, but I had a harder time convincing him that it wasn't made by Apple.

As long as you don't think all Dutch think the same! Most people I know, know the difference between an apple and a pear...

Or just that most people aren't avid readers (if they read novels at all) and have no interest in hearing more about a dedicated e-reader.

Where as the iPad has been all over the news (both reports and the TV ad) so people are interested in seeing it for the time being. And it does more than just read so it has a broader appeal.

It just so happened that a fellow sitting next to me on a flight to Ft Lauderdale Fl had an iPad. I'd never seen one before this morning. I was quite impressed by it; even enough to replace my Sony 700.

Was he using it solely as a reader? (At least, while he was on the flight, I mean.)

What's this elitist crap or the snide remarks at Apple's marketing?
First: a product without marketing is useless. Want to sell, market it well.

Second: I've had people call my portable devices every variation of everything.
"Is that a palm" when I was on a color pocket pc. My symbian smartphone was called a pocket pc (it had big telephone-buttons on it!). And when I had that clamshell psion S5, people compared it with those organizer/translator thingies.

It's just whatever's being marketed at the time that will give the name of any similar device.

Thats funny, here in germany i have been always asked if it was a Sony reader which i use. People really seem to have heard about this Sony thingie all around here in my region.
I was using the Kindle 2 or my Cybook but yesterday i was out for lunch surfing on my iPad and somebody asked how much the books cost for the "Sony Reader".

Thats funny. Everybody on this planet is talking about the iPad and then this question, i was really amused

I've yet to see an eReader in the wild. Then again, I work from home so "the wild" is mostly my kids sports events or church. I do take my iPad with me to the games and to church -- and there is always a great amount of interest. I use it to show the photos I take of the games and it's wonderful to see people looking at large versions of the photos.
