Technically... Yes. If it is there, it takes power when the PEz is awake.
Realisticly. It might trime a few reading hours off of a charge that lasts weeks.

So if you must have your charge last a day longer, don't INSERT a SD Card

*lol* Ok, thanks for the info. I think I'll just keep using the card.

There is no battery in the SD card, so the power to operate your SD card must come from the PocketPRO battery. There is also internal circuitry that must be activated to read from the SD card that would normally be powered down when reading from the internal memory. That being said, the extra power drain is relatively small with most SD cards, but I just prefer to keep things as efficient as possible.

Got it. I guess I just took it for granted that it using an SD card wouldn't use any extra battery... although I don't know why, because I know it uses extra juice on my computer to power a USB stick, or my mp3 player... I guess I just never thought about it.

The difference is so nominal that it really doesn't matter. I would not be surprised if it used more battery to copy from the SD to internal memory than it does just to read off the memory card.

I suppose a person who enjoyed statistics could do a study to figure out just how much of a drain on the battery it is with the SD card. Although that person wouldn't be me... I do not enjoy, nor am I any good with statistics. Just ask my college stat professor.

I put most of my books for my Pocket Pro on a 4 Gig SanDisk Ultra SDHC card and while I'm not backpacking across the tundra, out-of-range of easy charging opportunities, I am not noticing any loss-of-charge issues. (I 'monkey about' with the PP plugged into the USB port frequently - moving books, tweaking CSS settings, etc. such that I'm probably getting "topped off" charge-wise.)

I do the same thing with my PRS-600 (also a 4 Gig SanDisk Ultra), which is more the energy-hog, and I simply make a point of throwing it onto the PSP charger for a couple hours whenever I know I'll be using the reader for an extended period time. So far, it works for me.

I appreciate that SD cards consume more power than running everything off the internal memory, but in my case, I haven't noticed any problems for my devices. I respect other's choices for relying more on the internal memory for power (and other reasons). I simply choose a different approach.

Cheers!

A very sensible analysis and sound basis for a usage scenario!!!!! I go just the other way because I just can't stand the thought of nearly 500 Megs of storage capacity going to waste, but having options is a very good thing. As they used to say many years ago, "different strokes for different folks".
