Recently, I bought several books for which the fontsize looks small, even in the "Very Large" mode. I compared them with other books on my Nook and found the typesize on the screen was smaller by half. There seems to be a lot of variability in this feature from book to book. I'd like to see publishers agree on some industry standards. Also, the ebooks should be tested in the various readers. "Very Large" fontsize should not appear "Kinda Small"

If a book is not DRM protected, I can import it into Sigil and change the fontsize. Are there any fixes when the book is DRM protected?
Are you also changing the font type? I've noticed that sizes sometimes differ based on font types. The books I've looked at seem to have at least 2 font types. You might want to try that!

Done that. They're all small. Simpler cleaner fonts are easier to read as fine print, but its still a pain to have the largest typesize too small.

Remove DRM? Not going to tell you how here, but it's not hard to find or to do.

On principle, I wouldn't mess with DRM. What I would like to see are lots of consistently good products. What I perceive is happening is something like would have existed if the carriage makers and horse drayage companies were in control of the auto industry at its beginning.

I've sent letters to publishers and retailers and get form letter answers back saying, "I'm sorry but this is something we don't control." Eventually, when there is enough demand, they will come around and make sure quality is better controlled.

When the nook first appeared I thought it was something that I wanted. I loved the idea of seeing my book covers on the little screen at the bottom. Then it was mentioned that this only worked with books bought from Barnes and Noble so I didn't buy the nook. I have heard there have been upgrades and whatnot, is there a way now for all the books to appear on the bottom screen? If there is it will be my next ereader.

It will show book cover art from other purchasing stores as long it is encoded in it.

To change or add a book cover, you can upload the book into Calibre and click on Edit Meta Data. One of the things you can do here is to choose or change the book cover. In this mode you can insert a copy of any picture you want. It could be a saved copy of the book cover image, or any other picture you might want to enter, e.g. of your dog or cat.

Once you have done that, you click "Send Device" and reload your modified book file back on your Nook.

Thanks for the info, this was the only thing holding me back from purchasing one. Now that I know there is a way to show sideloaded book covers I will be making the nook my next reader.

Glad to hear it. I did about six months' research before buying the nook. I love it.

Just as an aside: I never used to read more than one book at a time. Now, I find myself jumping between 3 or 4 books since I only have to carry one device. Has anyone else experienced this?

This works to show the picture when reading the book, but can you get the 'covers view' for sideloaded books? I haven't been able to find a way - the option doesn't (seem to) show when looking at My Documents.

@lionel47 Wow, you really did your research.

And yes, the nook is a very nice piece of hardware and because it runs Android, it's only going to keep getting better with every software upgrade.

Yes, I really did think about it a lot. A different vendor who also has a forum on this board kept promising a new product that never materialized. The nook was actually my second choice but I could not be happier.

There really isn't a way, as far as I can determine on DRM'ed ePub books to change the font size.

The only realistic solution would be either if you got into the habit of removing DRM from your books - may be illegal, or may be unclear legally until a test case wherever you live - morally it's a grey area too. The other solution would be for B&N to simply put XXL 3XL etc on the font sizes, as a workaround for books which are published with the font size set too small.

Finally if you are speaking to retailers, I'm surprised at the results you've received. I've only spoken to retailers and publishers a few times, in every case they've been reasonable in their responses. However I have seen other people on these forums (sorry I can't provide a link) who have received very positive results from retailers if they contact them to advise of errors in books. I'd like to be more sure of this, but I'm afraid I am not, is it possibly the case that the books with very small font sizes could be considered as formatting mistakes? Perhaps if you were to contact a retailer and put it across that the book you purchased was incorrectly formatted, rather than asking them to pick an industry standard font size, or increase it then they might respond in a more productive way? It might be worth a try! Certainly if extra large is actually small then to me that seems to be an error.

So adding the cover in Calibre doesn't fix the issue of not letting you browse by cover in the small screen at the bottom of the device?? Guess I won't be getting the nook then.

you can browse by cover if you root your nook (very easy to do) it also gives you folders and many other features. I would not be surprised the next firmware update will have some of these features as well. The reason they are the most asked for ones, and the firmware updates are coming out fast and strong.

also the $50 gift card you get when you buy a nook at the moment is not to be sneezed at :-)
