What? I thought The award was for a new writer....how do you win it three times. Aren't you an 'established' writer after the first time?

Oops, my understanding is totally wrong.

From Wikipedia:
The Arthur C. Clarke Award is a British award given for the best science fiction novel first published in the United Kingdom during the previous year.

Not an easy read, but worth it. You have to be really in the mood for a complex book or mieville will not be enjoyable. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a easy read, like a pip and flinx novel or a starwars novel, but sometimes something more heavy can be good as well. Steven erikson is kinda like mieville imo.

I felt like the book I read, and the one I started, were more about the style than the substance. There were some interesting ideas which kept me engaged enough to finish the first book, but the characterizations were annoying and the pacing dragged. It's been years since I read it though, so I can't be more specific in my criticism.

Just wanted to say that I am a dedicated Miéville fan. The guy is good. He and Bacigalupi are my idols.

Hadn't heard the New Weird label before. I usually call his work steampunk with a heavy dose of fantasy.

Hadn't heard of China Mieville before, but picked up Perdido Street Station and am enjoying it so far. Once again, thanks folks for pointing me at authors I'd probably not tried.
