Aggh famous last words from me earlier
My reader froze trying to change the font size in an lrf file uploaded from calibre
Finally I took out the memory card and pushed the reset then the slide bar then the home button etc. and it went to a loading book page. SO I did it all again twice more and it seems ok now.
Maybe I just got it in the right moment of whatever it thought it was doing. Maybe it got tired of being poked with a pin.
Very frustrating.
Hope yours strts up again soon.

Okay... an update... I tried absolutly everything I could think of except sending it off for repair or paying a repair centre to do it, so I decided to take matters into my own hand... so following the prs 700 disassemble guide on flikr i took my prs 600 apart. Once I'd exposed the battery I unplugged it and lo and behold... nothing happened. The screen was still displaying the half and half image mention earlier and there was no change. disappointed I tried plugging my usb charger in with the battery unplugged to see if it would work that way, but still no change, no light and no registering on the pc. Even more dissapointed i plugged the battery back in and was in the process of unplugging it when i noticed something different... A RED LIGHT!!!! It would seem theres a harder reset than the hard reset lol. everthing is now working hunky-dory and loading up. I should point out however that the battery was completly drained despite the length of time it had been left on a charge from the mains power supply, which is weird, but at this point its happily charging and working at the same time, so touch wood everything is right with the world again.

Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions
