Sony does have The Lord of the Rings set. Just that they have the all-in-one set. So get that and enjoy. |

I wanted the 3 separate books. Don't know why, it's not like the book is too thick to read or something as it would be in paperback. I think if you see how many pages it is to read the whole story one might be overwhelmed. But hey you save $15 if you get the one book. You are correct that you should be able to change the font but a reviewer said you could not. Why would he lie? Should I take the chance and buy it? What if he was right? I have the three-book edition--just bought it last week. I was actually going to buy the three separately for double the price (I'm not sure why), but ROTK wasn't available at the time.
The book is great. Formatted well, tight margins, default font perfectly sized. I don't have it in front of me, but it's ePub, it does zoom the text. What doesn't zoom are the figures. So, the map of Middle-Earth at the beginning of the book is unreadable. Unfortunate, but only sends us elsewhere to look for the maps. |

The 505 and 300 can only change the font sizes. The 600, 700 and 900 have a separate zoom and pan option that allows them to resize the maps and see them better.

I suspect operator error or confusion on the part of the reviewer. Any ePub should allow font resizing on a Sony Reader.

I have had issues with at least three ePub books from the Sony store, in each case the books were part of a series. The issue is that, using my 505, I could not adjust the text of the book, only its headings.
Has anyone else had this problem? Contacting Sony has been an exercise in frustration; they blame their publishers. I can understand that Sony itself doesn't create the ePub version, but now I'm wary -- as I told them -- of buying any more of their books. Who wants to squint through the last book in a series??? |

I just got my refurb Sony Touch and am loving it, but the Sony eBook Store is a bit of a disappointment. What surprises me most is that they don't allow us to read samples of books we may be interested in. That's a big thing! It's true that I download more samples than I buy, but I rarely buy without having first seen a sample. This is going to hurt their sales, at least as far as this consumer is concerned.
Guess I'll be dealing with mostly third party sites for my Sony ebook shopping. |

As for the reviewer lying, it could have been due to something the reviewer was doing wrong or the reader being used having bugs. the Kobo reader has bugs in font sizing. So I just think the reviewer was wrong. He was wrong, I've had the omnibus on my 505 and it is able to change the font size no problem. |

The mystery to me is why some of the books in a series have re-sizeable fonts and some do not. Just got a PRS-900, with its magic button to buy from Sony's bookstore, but am thinking of switching to alternate sources if I can't depend on Sony to sell us readable books!

Sony has nothing to do with it, it is the publisher and how they create the Epub. You would have the same issue with a book from Amazon unless Amazon has a certain criteria that they impose on the publishers. I have purchaed the Hobbit and I found that I needed a large font size to read it, while my other books I use the med font size. Since the Lord of the Rings trilogy is from the same publisher, I will assume I will be able to increase the font size like I did with the Hobbit. By the way in the Hobbit there are some pictures in it and they look great on the 900.
As I have a better handle on things now that I have used the 900 for a little longer, I will say that I am more disapointed on how many books are not in Epub format compared to the Sony store having books that I want. It's not their fault that many of the books I want are not available. I did a search on Amazon and they are not there either. Google books on the Sony web site is helpful, and booksonboard.com is another great source. |

Of course, if you get DRM-free books, you can just convert them to any format you want.

As far as the Tolkien eBooks go, get the ePub versions as you will get the best graphics.

I'm disappointed with the Sony Store as well. They only have the last Inspector Morse book, by Colin Dexter, whereas the Kindle Store has had a large selection for 2 years. I keep waiting, but no go.
I love my 505, but I'm reluctant to invest any more money in the sony store, for two reasons. First, the books can't be read on my other devices, and second, the lack of selection makes me worry they will shortly abandon e-reading all together and I'll have spent a lot of money on orphaned e-books. If they came out with a sony app, like the kindle store did, I'd feel more confidence. But right now, not so much. |
