I would agree about "flash" being a problem. Only because all my computers can do flash and my laptop and netbook can do flash and I really have no idea how much of the web is "flash". I think I'm like most people, it could be a "shock" to learn how much "flash video/games" there are on the web.
It's one thing to "hear" that ipad can't do flash and it's another to experience the web without "flash". I'm sure in the coming months many sites will try to figure out how to be IPAD compatible. I guess it depends how easy it is for these sites to convert. I do have the itouch and I just web browsed a little bit using google news as my main page and it was ok for me. But with IPAD being a lot bigger I would have to play with a couple of days to find out how my "computer experience of the web" differs from the IPAD's experience. Fair enough? |

You can easily see what life is like without flash right now by simply disabling it in your browser.

Good point! Come sense too! I will try it.
![]() Can you explain how to disable it, I'm on foxfire and looked in all the tabs in OPTIONS for something to disable. I see adobe pdf stuff and other programs but not anything I would recognize as "flash" related. Went through the tabs , including applications and it listed many but I couldn't find "flash". Spent about 10 minutes looking and couldn't find it. It could be there and I need help to find it. Thanks Last edited by richman; 04-27-2010 at 06:54 PM. |

In Firefox 3.x go to Tools, then click on the Plugins tab.
There you'll find the Shockwave Flash plugin - disable it. While you are at it, disable also the Java plugin, since the iPad doesn't support that either. Disable also Flip4Mac if you have it. |

While Mobile Safari doesn't support Java it does support Java Script. So you'd still need to leave the Java plugin enabled.

I suppose this is not a perfect test for both Java and Java Script. |

Thanks guys, I'll use these settings the next couple of days to see if I can live with it. It's probably good advice to tell others to try to see if they can live with the IPAD beforehand.
Are there any other places to check, I did go to TOOLS , then ADD-ONS, then tab for PLUG-INS and disabled "java deployment toolkit", java platform se 6u18, and shockwave flash. Is there anything else I should check in OPTIONS? If I should keep jave deployment toolkit or java platform se 6 u18 , let me know I wasn't sure about those 2? |

Keep all the java on. Just disable anything that says Flash or Shockwave. It isn't a true Apples to apples test, but it will be pretty close to what surfing on an iPad can be like.
One important note is many sites show you one site on a desktop and a different site on an iPad, such as Disney. On an iPad they redirect you to http://home.disney.go.com/mobile/?device=ipad Last edited by scottjl; 04-27-2010 at 07:42 PM. |

ok, I turned java back on , although I took off java development tool because it had READ Mark next to it , saying that it is known to cause problems to security and known issues, but I turned the regular java on. Don't know how much I use the java development tool so I guess when foxfire says I need it , I will then find out.

Went to utube and I can't see videos, now on IPAD you can see those videos, right?, you will get redirected to different area. On google I can't see videos embedded in NEWS page, can you see them on IPAD. Need a way to make foxfire think "IM an IPAD" . ![]() p.s. I understand Job's dislike of FLASH because he feels it to be unstable, but , I think it could come back and bite him in the YOU KNOW WHAT, APPLE should have allowed Adobe to make version that APPLE could approve of , they should have worked together , but NOW it's a HATE THING, and seems like adobe will try to do everything it can to "HELP" get apple, doing who knows what. I understand the "unstable thing", but apple could have assisted adobe in making version that would work. You know it and I know it. NOW the LINE is drawn in the sand. And it's APPLE against the WORLD type thing, and YEAH ,... APPLE could win. ![]() Apple expects the Internet to change so it can RUN on IPAD. Right? Last edited by richman; 04-27-2010 at 08:40 PM. |

Actually Apple expects the internet to change and adopt what are published standards, HMTL 5, CSS, h.264, where Flash is a proprietary program from Adobe. While people may complain that he's "wrong" when you look at the letter of it, he's doing the right thing. Adobe always treated Mac Flash as second class with lackluster performance. Flash on mobile platforms is slower, less featured (it's technically Flash Lite) and drains batteries quickly. The funny thing is, if web sites change to support these standards, they'll run on any platform, with and without Flash. So in the end, it is in their best interest to start supporting the web standards. Every web site that uses Flash adds some coin into Adobe's pockets, from licensing fees to use Flash to development costs to code the sites. Sites that code to web standards don't pay out licensing fees to anyone for those standards, though they do pay development costs. Can you really fault Apple for not caring if Adobe makes a buck or not? Can you blame them for not caring to force developers and users to use a proprietary coding language? Adobe could have offered up Flash years ago to a standards body and made it a real open standard, but they didn't. Computer History is full of proprietary programming languages and environments that some company created, that flourished and died years later leaving everyone in a lurch. Flash is no different.
There are some other things you can do to trick web sites into thinking you're surfing from an iPad, changing your use string, but it's probably more involved than you want to get. Yes, you can see Youtube videos on an iPad, you just get the h.264 encoded versions, which you're probably not getting on your desktop. Last edited by scottjl; 04-27-2010 at 09:34 PM. |

Current frustrations - didn't see anything on storing, reviewing photos, albums. Doesn't anyone use the iPad to view photos? That's my biggest problem! How to look at the 1000's of pictures I have stored on my Windows PC without going thru iPhoto to redo everything.
