Interesting--and thanks for the comments re: delstar. I wouldn't have noticed that. I thought the support for lots of formats was really excellent, but not so great if they all end up as txt.

It is the same as the Walgreen Delstar. It is in the wiki under https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Delstar_OpenBook

It's also showing up as the Delstar Booksmart here:
http://www.bonton.com/product/home/e...cid=9534545944 according to the original threads about the Delstar OpenBook, the BookSmart was going to be the next step up and offer DRM ePub. But there is no evidence of that here, and the BookSmart doesn't even show up on Delstar's web site. |

Just be absolutely sure you buy the model number in this thread and NOT the one at Delstar's website at the moment. The one on the website is an older model and does NOT support any form of DRM at all. None. No Amazon, no Sony, no ADE, no library brooks with Overdrive. Nada.

Well as I see it the critical part is does it display the formatting for those file types? The drm is an issue yes but if all it does is strip all file types down to a text file like the one marketed through Walgreens don't bother. Most other file types with all the formatting stripped out look pretty horrible.

What I find encouraging (aside from the pricing) is that the hardware design is on the right track for a paperback-replacement ebook reader. If only they'd realize that they don't really need to support all formats under the sun, just *one* done right...
As is, if I knew it did pdf properly (and I D-E-S-P-I-S-E pdf as an "ebook format") I'd get it just for the screen and ergonomics. It wouldn't be hard to convert the BAEN HTML editions into readable PDFs. Or JPG folders for that matter. Annoying but not hard. And that price point does make up for a bit of annoyance. Who knows, maybe the hackers will pick it up and start tinkering. One can only dream of what OpenInkpot or Pocketbook Software would make of this thing. Give it time: ereader nirvana (5" WVGA color for $99) is near. :-) Last edited by fjtorres; 04-23-2010 at 08:36 AM. |
