Possible Solution:

Just don't put your ebook in a folder within a folder within a folder... 2 layers are plenty.
I don't find any such fault.

My deepest nesting is

MySDroot/New Fictionwise/SF Shorts/More M-Z

and folder 'More M-Z' has 20+ items in it that I have no trouble with.

my books for the JBL on SD cards.

See the Filename thread here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80318

The JBL will display author on the first line and title on the second if it knows them from a txt filename (the # trick) or if the headers/ metadata in FB2 or PDF contain them. Even if other types do contain the information the JBL doesn't take any notice.

So I would like a setup option to just show file and folder names (in order to match what Windows Explorer shows)

What's your current firmware? Mine isn't the latest and I probably should update it.

I am still on the original - firmware v0.14n

I got a weird windows error "nested too deep" when trying to copy the update to a SD card so gave up for now.

The customer support folks at Ectaco are great!

After a frustrating experience with Fictionwise, who wiped out purchased books before I downloaded them and then erased my micropay, I went searching for a new ebook provider. Sony's Reader Library looks like the best alternative for non B&N new ebooks. Unfortunately, the format doesn't work on jetBooks. Ectaco customer service said they are working on compatibility and sent good list of other ebook download sites to use in the meantime. The response was within 24 hours.

I just tested it again. It looks like the problem I described above with 3 or more layers of folders causes stalling only shows up when it's in your SD card. If you're working with the internal memory, then you can embed it in as many folders as you want.

Something I noticed the other night. I've been reading "Programming Ruby" in .mobi that I purchased from O'Reilly and I've noticed the jetbook doesn't show the line breaks in many of the code examples. I checked the same file on my Kindle and all the code examples are rendered with the proper line breaks.

This may not be related but I noticed a similar thing on all of my ePub files. I had created all of them with a space between paragraphs but when I placed them on the jetBook Lite the spaces between paragraphs were gone. I had to go back and reconvert a couple of books to ensure that indents were at the beginning of every paragraph.

Maybe I have no place commenting, because I don't own a jetBook Lite. But I don't see any mention of the drawbacks that have held me back from buying it.
  1. no linking (not just me, I've seen owners wish for linking). I'm currently reading "The Book of Basketball," and it has literally several hundreds of footnotes that are all located at chapter ends. This book would be impossible to read properly on the jetBook.

Also, without linking, you can't simply skip past uninteresting Calibre newspaper and magazine stories.

  2. no support for public library (OverDrive) ebooks. Though hardly a knock on Ectaco, since they currently support one type of B&N DRM, and probably B&N ePub support is on the way, which is great DRM support for the price.

I agree no linking plus a lack of Table of Contents is a weakness of the jetBook Lite. I did not realize that these were not supported when I bought the device.

I don't know that this is a weakness. It certainly is a feature that is missing, but I knew that up front. I have yet to use the library for books, but for books that I buy I am comfortable removing the DRM and converting the book to a suitable format for my jetBook Lite.

So for me this was a missing feature that I weighed prior to buying the device.

Right. This is practically an "on the box" feature, not difficult to determine before buying. It doesn't belong in this thread.

Might I suggest buying that new ipad or that kindle if you want these features? Features that are clearly not part of the package are not weaknesses nor flaws. I have pointed this out earlier. To complain about this is like complaining that your beagle doesn't get any bigger than 30 pounds or so and that you wanted a 150 pound dog.

Edit.

Might as well complain that you can't watch your blueray disc on this device.

John Hodgman's books also use a ton of footnotes so that is good to know. I'll stick with Stanza for reading those, but out of my 400+ books I own this probably only impacts 10 in a major way. Still it is something I wish they could fix, but probably is a hardware limitation.

The library thing will hopefully be updated at some point, but it isn't technically impossible to convert those to plain epubs. It of course requires some honesty to delete the books manually when your 21 days are up.
