And I think that their purchase price for a display is much less than 275 EUR.

Let me put it like this: My trust in Irex is damaged beyond repair.

It is probably somewhat less, but I wouldn't bet on much less....

I think we should put this issue to the other forum. I would like to know what the irex guys say about it. I think they should have a better repair policy than that even if they loose money on it (that I am not sure of).

This sounds like really bad news. It's actually hard to believe. The Iliad has a glass front so that it does not break easily (that was the reason iRex gave for putting the glass there...).
Now, if it really does break that easily, then something in the construction just is not right. I handly all my electronics with sxcessive care, so nothing like this hashappened to me...EVER...but I was planning on taking the Iliad along on travels as soon as there was an adequate casing solution available. If the device is as fragile as it appears however, it might take more than a soft-case to protect it...bad news indeed.

Let's try to get some answers out of the iRex guys at their forums...

I personally think that you should protect it with really hard cover. (A metal case would be the best.) I use a separate handbag just for the iliad.

I am sure that they used as hard material as they could - but that does not mean it can not break. Difficult to do any better than that.

What they should do is to clearly draw people's attention how to treat it properly (apart from the note somewhere in the manual that do not apply excessive pressure on the screen), and adopt a policy of reasonable/not excessive fee for repairment.

For those of you woudl like to know how its goes on my Broken IREX. I just received the return box. I create another problem. (my unit was working albeit the broken screen) I tried to follow the reminders to back up the data on the internal memory of the iLiad by simply cut and paste most of the items into my computer. Now I can only see a big “!” on the screen. Apparently, I screw up the software as well!!! Oh...touch wood! Anyway, I will send out the unit today and looking forward to having my functional unit the soonest the possible.

yes, I saw the big ! on the screen. Again ,my ereader was functional but with a broken screen.
Befoer sneding out my ereader for repair, I tried to back up my personal document and contenett from my borken reader to my computer. After simply cutting and pasting contents from my ereader. The the big big "!" show up. I guess may be I remove some important hidden files in the memory as well. Anyway, the take home message is " be careful while your are cutting and pasting content betweeen your ereader and your computer". You may screw up your thing!

Good luck! My ereader in the return box on its way to the reparing center. Let's prey and hope it will be return to his master ASAP. In fact, I am kind of upset that I only used the ereader for a very short time (not mentioning it poor power management; only few hours operation time with fully charge) It is not even good for my long distance flight (22 hours) from Hong Kong to USA!!! I have to reader something elsa after all the juice gone!!!!!! Kind of upsetting me few time suring my trip. I was hoping the battery of the ereader at least can last for a day (not menioned its specifcation can turn XXXX page!!! Not ture at all)
Best, Ivan

Thanks, drop. I have retunedmy broken reader weks agao (almost forgot about this. I have received message from support centre ten days ago claming not recviing my reader, yet; I did send out my ereader via the return box weeks ago. According to the track number of my package, the status of my ereader in which has received and signed by ASUT in HERZEBROCK CLARHOLZ, DE. Finally, they found my reader. Base on the progress, I don't know how long it will take to have my ereader back.

Too bad.....I ordered my erader and used it for few days and have to be repaired for few weeks; that is pretty interesting. B.T.W, how's the power management of your new version of firmware? Can the battery can last > 16hours wwithout doing anything? I am thinking to get a Sony ereader, seems it performs quite well.

BEst, IC

Hello everyone, I'm Cloud. Nice to meet you

My iLiad's screen suddenly broke about 2 weeks ago.
(please see attached jpg.
I think this is the same breakdown as Ivan's and Drops')

I think I have never applied high pressure.
But the irex support team said to me,
"Our engineers investiagted your Display issue. Unfortunately this is out of warranty.
The estimated costs...will be 275 EURO. Please visit our website..."
Of course I asked them why my issue is out of warranty.
Then they said "this damage was caused due to accidential pressure."

I have got angry for 2 reasons
1) They told me to pay 275 EUR before they explain why my issue is out of warranty.
2) Of course I have applied some pressure, for example when I'm using a stylus.
But I never think I made a big mistake(drop to the floor, strike the screen,...)
I cannot understand why I should pay such much money!

How do you think about it?

Hi Cloud,

it seems like the Illiad display is extremly fragile, a lot of users have reported the problem with the broken screen.

You can be lucky with the 275 Eur answer, I had to buy a whole new device because they've told me that my unit was "damaged beyond repair". As I've explained in another thread I'll have a lawyer looking into this. We have now two devices, if a simple switch of the screens gets the old damaged unit to work again we will file a criminal complaint for fraud against Irex.
