I never expected it to be readable outside. What I found worse was the fingerprints you can see on the screen when he goes outside... It's one of the reasons I really don't like those high glossy screens. Also, when he is inside, you can see the lamps above him in perfect detail on the screen. I'd be worried more about that than the fact that it's not really readable outside...

Can you put a non-glare screen protector on a capacitive screen? I know from my GPS device (which does have a transflective screen, but that's beside the point) that it helps greatly in sunlight conditions.

One thing to remember about the glare on these glossy screens is you're looking at it from the angle of the camera. It's much less pronounced from the first person perspective.
No argument about the fingerprints. Even though you don't see them when it's on, I'm constantly cleaning my Touch. |

The jetBook sure could use an update. Better screen, better chassis, better processor, better everything. If they could put something out with better than 200ppi resolution, a superior design, enough juice to make loading and running through books a relevant software a breeze, and a good UI...I'd be all over it. Of course, I'd be all over anything that could achieve all that stuff.

yes that a classic scenario where the Ipad would be a flop as a e reader, if you have a daily commute on public transit, (bus, train , van pool....) the natural sunlight flooding in the windows would make the Ipad unreadable where the Jet book or my libre would handle the mix lighting with easy (ie train going in and out of tunnels) Yes the jetbook or libre my not be the fastest , sexiest e reader but, they are a brilliant compromise design, great screen, compact take everywhere size and weight, decent battery life , good format compatibility, they are superior e readers to the Ipad. Yeah it would be nice to have a magic do all device but that's not reality. You want a good e book reader get one , if you want a multi media /web/productivity deceive that you can use out of direct sunlight get the Ipad if you got the $$$$ and want to put up with is wonkie wifi ![]() Last edited by bob1xxx; 04-08-2010 at 12:16 PM. |

Good points!
But how about if you were in the dark room or outside at NIGHT , compare the two of them, and the IPAD wins hands down. Gee, how many people spend a lot of time at the beach reading, most of my reading is at night, or in a dark room. In fact, you would have to be either very brave or very foolish to bring a 500 dollar high tech device to the beach, the sand and other elements would ruin this device. |

I guess I could take an ebook reader to the beach and use it to get attention, but I doubt I would actually read there. There are often much more pleasant things to look at than an E-Ink screen. Some of them are almost as slow though. ![]() |

a) It's a fair cop. I'd never use the HP laptop I'm typing on outdoors either. Each tool to its task.
b) The jetBook is good because it doesn't have any of the 'features' LDBoblo requested. It only does one thing, cheaply and well. (I have my own very short list of minor annoyances with it, but no showstoppers.) That's not much different from most reflective display readers, LCD or eInk. If 80% of the time, the box is showing a simple, static, screen of text you shouldn't use a powerful microprocessor. Ditto higher than needed resolution. c) The killer swat, IMO, was when he pulled the jetBook out of his pocket, flicked it on with one hand, and it showed up well on camera with no fiddling. Nice hit. d) You read indoors on a jetBook just like you read on a paper book. "TURN ON THE LIGHT, YOU IDIOT! YOU'LL RUIN YOUR EYES."--Mother None of these points make me more or less likely to buy an iPad. I'm still on the fence waiting to see how it works after a software upgrade or two, and some real-world reviews. Regards, Jack Tingle |

And justifying low resolution is laughable. I can understand why some people would support cheap, underpowered processors that make phones look like supercomputers, but the resolution comment was just funny. |

The last time I was at the beach the only thing I saw that could be considered reading was texting on iphones. Heck I saw many more mini ipads (aka iphones) than any ebook readers, as a matter of fact I didn't see any ebook readers. I don't think this will be that much of an issue.
BTW has anyone talked about illustrated books? Tech Manuals? |
