See if bonjour is on the list. If it is, make sure it's status is "started". If it is not you can select it then start it manually. BOb |

Check what your network settings are on the ipod touch. You find it from the Settings app. Choose wi-fi and you see a list of wi-fi networks. Make sure your own network has a checkbox. Click the blue > and it will give your network info. Verify you have a similar ip address (eg. 192.168.1.102) and the router is the same as your pc's default gateway.
It's possible your ipod touch is connected to someone else's open wi-fi network. If your ipod Touch can access internet services but it can't see your own pc it could be this. Once you know your ipod's ip address from your pc run a cmd prompt and ping your ipod's address. eg. ping 192.168.1.102 and see if your PC can see it. |

It's definitely a network communication problem though. Your network, or at least your pc, is blocking access to other computers. If you had another computer in your house the obvious test is to see if that computer can see http://192.168.1.101:8080 but it looks like you don't. Both your PC and your Touch can access the Internet so that says that both have their ip information (address, subnet mask, default gateway) set properly. So something is blocking access at a very low level. The likely suspects are the Windows 7 firewall, an over zealous anti-virus program installed (like McAfee) or your router - some newer routers have built in firewalls. I guess the next step is to turn off the Windows 7 firewall and check connectivity. If you don't have something like McAfee installed, the next point to look is your router. Something like "AP isolation" or "unblocked anonymous Internet requests". Let me know what type of router you are using and I might track down it's settings for firewall and wireless. |

I'm using the standard Windows firewall, and turning it off makes no difference. I use AVG antivirus, and tried stop the services running, and it doesn't make any difference either. Neither with Stanza or Calibre content server.
I don't have another computer until in about a week (but I can borrow my neighbour's laptop tonight). My router is a 3G router; Huawei B970. I found these links: http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/p...iew.do?id=1880 http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthre...70-HSPA-Router Don't know if it's relevant, but connection worked with my iMac. |

But, for calibre, you are right, Bonjour has nothing to do with that. But, if she can't ping her PC then it won't work. BOb Last edited by pilotbob; 04-07-2010 at 10:47 AM. |

It would be good test with another computer so you can test connections between all three and see which one is blocked or if they all are.

Well, from the borrowed PC (having logged on to my own local network), I tried to ping my PC and the Touch, and got the same result as before 'Destination host unreachable' (and not connect to calibre's content server running on my PC either).

I was having problems with my iPod Touch not connecting to Calibre over my wireless network and I turned off the PC, Touch, modem and router for a few minutes and then restarted everything. When I started Calibre back up Stanza on the iPod was able to connect to my library and I could once again download books.

So to summarize: 1 - Desktop pc: http://192.168.1.100:8080/ works. This being the computer running calibre 2 - iPod Touch safari http://192.168.1.100:8080/ doesn't work but internet does 3 - borrowed laptop http://192.168.1.100:8080/ doesn't work but internet does The fact that the laptop is on your network, and I'm assuming you can browse the internet with it, yet can't see your calibre web server means something in between is stopping that traffic. I would have to say, with your Windows 7 firewall off and no luck, it's something about your 3G router. Can't explain why it worked with your Mac unless it is your virus software blocking connections in. Sometimes it's not enough to try and stop those programs they leave services and system hooks still in place. The best way to be sure is uninstall it temporary and reboot. But then again if the laptop can't ping the Touch, it's got nothing to do with your calibre pc. I'm not familiar with that type of modem and if it's doing something like vpn connections or some sort of segregation. If you're renting it with some sort of support, I would call and explain your problem. The simplest thing to explain is your 2 pc setup; 1 pc running web server @ http://192.168.1.100:8080/ which you can see and 2nd pc that can't see http://192.168.1.100:8080/ Alternately, log into the router @ http://192.168.1.1 (the default password is likely admin) and in the security page, see what the various settings are. |

That would all be correct. I had intended to try to de-install AVG antivirus today, but when I started up my computer (netbook) this morning, it was dead, too

You could try Blink Personal... hmm... it used to be free. There is also Avast...
Frankly, if you use Win7 with UAC enabled and use IE8 or Firefox you are pretty safe. I've stopped using virus software ever since I got a virus with McAfee installed. Ok, it wasn't a virus, it was a trojan and it was IE6's fault. BOb |
