Should work. What exactly is the problem ? (And yeah, this is typically why I have DRM, only causes trouble to the legitimate buyer). |

I must be a little bit masochist...
I tried to buy another ePub ADE book today from KOBO... Corsair from Clive Cussler. When I put it on my Cybook Gen3, it opened no problem... I was very happy... I started turning the pages and at page 4 it went in that infernal loop again... I think My Cybook is going to become a very costly coaster... I am very sad... because I liked it very much... I'm sure it can be fixed in a future firmware upgrade, but everyone who encounters a problem needs to contact support@bookeen.com so that they know how widespread the issue is.

Also, store your books in a card, so that you can just remove the card (and delete/fix fhe book) if that happens again.

Hi again All,
I've been reading with interest other Gen3 users' problems with corrupted files. My loop of death problem was caused, I think, by three corrupted files out of nineteen (yes 19) I downloaded from two of the Uk's best established booksellers, Waterstones and WHSmith. Before I ping off to them in suitably robust language I want to check something. I downloaded each e-book file individually then disconnected the Gen3 from the computer to see if there was a problem. When, after a download, it went into the loop, I opened the ebook file on the computer and discovered a file called "manifest", which to my untrained eye looked very much like a recovery file. Deleting the offending e-book file - thru the computer - and the manifest file returned the Gen 3 to good health. (As captaingeorges said, the files show no errors and read ok in ADE). So, am I right in thinking the "manifest" file is a sign of a corrupt file? None of the ebooks which are now sitting happily on my working perfectly Gen3 showed a "manifest" file - only those that did caused the crash. Can't be a coincidence can it? Any thoughts? Thanks. |

I've had problems with epubs too ...
I would load new DRMed epubs onto the card first, cos if there's a problem, you can take it out. If you look at Waterstones, they say that they only guarantee them for Sony or something. People need to email to complain, they should be testing their books on all devices. |

I haven't had any trouble liberating epub files....It took a while to figure it out--try http://know-how.posterous.com and search for epub...but once I did it's a doddle.

Well! after following Graham's advice to send an email to bookeen support, I finally received a reply from them...
The message was in french, so I will not quote it, but basically what it says is that because I have a first generation Gen3 with a smaller memory, the machine has problem reading DRM ePub file... They are sorry about , are aware of the problem and trying to find a solution... So I guess I may get another reader when KOBO comes out with their own in may... Regards, Georges |

Has anyone had any luck solving this issue or more thoughts on what might be tried? I just upgraded from the 1.5 firmware to the 2.0 firmware. The first three ePub books I checked out from my public library site worked great, but the five books I bought from Fictionwise all put the device in this boot up loop. All five books work in ADE on my PC, both the copy on the PC and they copy on the device, so I don't think file corruption is the issue. The files from Fictionwise aren't any larger in size than the files from the library,so I don't see how memory could be the issue. The five books are from four different authors and three different publishers, so I don't think it is some sort of problem with the e-PUB format usage, unless it is a pervasive problem. Help?

A little luck and maybe a step closer
Hi guys, I'm new here and have been having this same problem. The books I've bought have been off the Kobo site, and some work some don't.
As I have been playing around, I finally opened ADE in one window and my 3Gen in another on the computer, to compare file types. This is what I found ADE Book title 1.epub Book title 2.epub etc. On the 3 Gen Book title 1.epub Book title 1.epub.bin Book title 1.epub.dat Book title 1.epub.thn Book title 2.epub Book title 2.epub.bin Book title 2.epub.dat Book title 2.epub.thn 4 files instead of 1 per book the .bin and .dat were 1KB a piece and the .thn file was 7 KB The epub file gets copied over, then the other files should be created by the reader. The.bin file was creating itself, on my books that didn't work, when I tried disconnecting. I did notice that one time the .dat file was missing from a working book and nothing changed, so I am guessing that the .thn file is the issue. The little research I have done, and I appoligize if I am telling anybody anything they already know, the .thn extension is a type of thumbnail. My last step was to take a book that was working, and change the .thn file to a non working books name. For example "Pirate Latitudes" was working and I changed it to "Born to Run". I then disconnected my 3Gen. Guess what. It booted properly and it went to the menu. The thumb nail for the book still was for "Pirate Latitudes" but the title next to it was correct. I then tried to select "Born to Run" and from there it rebooted. But it didn't do it automatically and I believe you could turn it off yourself I forgot to try that. Long story short the problem is still there, but I think if we figure out how to create the .thn file, we have solved our problem. Sorry for the long post, I'll never admit to being the most computer savy person on the planet. I'm going to keep working on it, but perhaps one of you has more expertise than myself. -Jon |

The Cybook creates the .thn file automatically from the book file if it does not exist. The format of the .thn file is quite simple, I created a script (for linux) to generate .thn files, it should be around the forums somewhere.

I have been able to recreate your partial success seismic Jon. As you suggested, I copied the .dat and .thn files from a working book to the failing one and now the library page will load. But selecting the book still causes the reboot.
I'm going to see if I can get Jellby's script to work for generating the .thn, but it is possible that whatever causes the .thn file to not be created is also causing the crash when we try to read. As suggested earlier in the thread, I did send an email to Bookeen on Tuesday night, but so far no response. |

OK, I found a Python script to generate thn files here. I now have a valid thn file with the appropriate image on my Cybook, but choosing the book still causes the device to reboot. I don't think the thn file itself is the problem. I think whatever causes the reboot happens before the thn file is generated, but doesn't really have anything to do with the thn itself. Back to digging...
