You skipped the conversion to PDB.
What we are trying to do is force Calibre to use certain methods that produce the result we want. It is important to have Calibre first import using the HTML decoder then create a PDB formated ebook, then import the PDB file (using the pdb decoder) and then create the epub, with the Jbook 5-inch output preference set. It only takes a few minuets. Luck; Ken Last edited by Ken Maltby; 04-09-2010 at 08:47 PM. |

The first progression of steps (always using Calibre) per your suggestion was: mobi ==> pdb ==> epub (formatted for JBL) The second, per your further suggestion was, starting from the epub derived immediately above: epub ==> html (via unzipping epub) ==> epub (formatted for JBL) Both methods produced good epubs, but each file came up a cropper on the JBL, yielding the dread "file too big" error. Are you saying the last set should have been as follows? epub ==> html (via unzip) ==> pdb ==> epub This whole business of converting to an epub, then using it to so circuitously produce another epub seems a little weird, but I'm fine with whatever works. HTML>PDB>EPUB (Going from mobi to HTML adds the additional epub stage.) My last post lays it out a little clearer I hope. If you can post a link to the original mobi file, I would be glad to try and see what the issue actually is. The procedure I have tried to describe has worked to reformat ebooks that caused the "File too big" error in the JBL (and having a large number of illustrations), in their original format to be made into epub files that work well in the JBL. There is no guarantee that it will fix this particular file though, there may well be some other problem that is not addressed by this exact procedure. Luck; Ken |

I'll upload the mobi to my site and send you a link to it via PM later today. I hope I haven't come off as ungrateful; I truly do appreciate the help. Success will really enhance the usefulness of my JBL. Thanks, Larry |

Un-zipping one of your good epub versions to HTML then making a pdb file from the HTML, and then creating an epub, from the pdb? And are you saying that that final epub still results in the "File too Big" error? Luck; Ken |

OK, I got it.
Not having worked with mobi that much, I decided to use mobi2html.exe to create an unpacked directory of the ebook. The "unpacked" directory had one .html file and 843 .gif files. Dragging&Dropping the .html file onto Calibre added the ebook as a .zip file. I had Calibre create a .pdb file from the .zip/.html. Then I had it create a .epub from the .pdb file. I then put both the .epub and the .pdb on the SD card I am currently using with the JBL. Just as you encountered, the .epub threw a "File to big" error and wouldn't load. Oddly, the .pdb loaded and looks OK. It is odd because when the .pdb has worked with the ebooks/manuals, that have a large number of illustrations, the conversion of that .pdb to .epub has resulted in an .epub that also worked. The .pdb isn't too bad and you could use that, but what looked better to me was to just use the JBL's html reading function. I just copied the "unpacked" folder the mobi2html.exe made onto the SD (You would probably want to rename the folder) and it looks quite good on the JBL. So, for mobi manual type ebook conversion for the JBL, I would now suggest just using "mobi2html.exe" (run in the CMD "DOS Box", for XP) with a space then the .mobi file. Then renaming the "unpacked" folder to the ebook/manual name and copying that folder onto your FAT32 formatted SD card. (One reason this worked so well for your manual is that it only had the one .html file, in the unpacked folder. I have attempted to put the GIMP2 manual on the JBL and it sorta works, but it is composed of a great many .html files, making navagation a problem.) Luck; Ken |

Great work, Ken! Thanks for putting me onto mobi2html; it produces superb htmls. The one I derived using your method displays beautifully on my JBL. I couldn't ask for more.
Now if only the JBL supported hyperlinks! Thank you for making my machine that much more useful. Cheers, Larry |
