But on the iPhone developers are working to a specific device with a specific screen size aren't they? On Android my impression is that there is a range of devices with different, albeit small, screen sizes. So developers would already be writing code that adapts. The question is how well it will adapt when the screen is much bigger.

Maybe, but there's just not so much you can do to make something look good when it's blown up 2-3 times it's original size, vs. having to fit some varied phone screen sizes that are all pretty small.

My point is that to adapt to varied screen sizes already the interface will be designed to expand. It's true that you won't get additional functionality on a much larger screen, buttons may be further apart, etc., but it may not need anything as crude as pixel doubling.

Anyway we'll see.

Yep, time we'll tell. Hopefully it will work out, I just see it as hard to get icons, text etc. to look good on various screen sizes when the difference is drastic like it is going from phone to 9.7" or larger tablets.

But either way it's not a big deal if they just make a phone and tablet version of the apps like a lot of iPhone devs are doing for the iPad. That's preferable to me actually as I'd rather my apps be optimized for the device I'm using.

So I do think that's one strength the iPad will have since devs are developing for one platform there, vs a wide array of android devices.

In any case, I'm pretty stocked to see what other tablets roll out the next 6 months or so. I'll probably hold off until the end of summer or maybe mid fall to think more seriously about buying one.

If nothing better is out, and there's no strong hints of a 2nd gen iPad coming soon I'll probably just grab a 32GB wifi only iPad then.

Funny you should ask. I was looking at an iPad clone just the other day on Amazon. Something called a Fujitsu Stylistic ST6012. Looks like it might have the features Apple left out, too.
