I shouldn't be so picky, but this actually isn't true for all of the US. Where I live now (Maryland), it is. It is never true in Michigan, where there are three legal ways to organize a public library, all with different funding schemes, plus penal fines, plus library co-operatives, etc.

It is often interesting to ask how one's local public library is funded, and how much the average tax payer pays per year. I bet most folks will be shocked how little they pay.

In our county there is a public library system ,but some cities have their own libraries, fortunately they let anybody with the valid driver license to use it. I am not sure about out of state folks, though...

Thank you so much QIB and Dale

For the info on researcher cards and user pay online library cards for ebooks.

I'll definitely check into this. I would certainly be very happy to pay for the privilege of being able to download ebooks from library systems other than mine - Toronto Public Library System.

Toronto is part of Overdrive and I have been happily downloading ebooks and audiobooks from them since I bought my PocketPro but as I said above, our selection here is not that great yet.

For me, being able to download ebooks from the library (any library) is the greatest thing since the proverbial sliced bread. Thanks again for all the help.

Are you say that when I said "most" that "most" isn't true. Two states are not most. I didn't say all.

Yes, I am saying that. Would you prefer I do all 50 states? I can. But you can go Topeka it yourself, rather than me wasting space here on a tangential issue.
