iRex have just had a similar incident (though to another network/channel), and also removed the link once it was reported. As said there, if we want the iLiad to succeed (which I certainly do, even if I am annoyed with them) giving publishers the impression that iLiad users are all pirates is not going to help in the slightest.

I think that the more publishers learn about e-book replays, the more likely that they will understand it's a very very small minority who pirate books. And that there are a huge majority of users that are frustrated by the rediculous efforts required to get an e-book in usable form for the long run. (There are also, of course, many who will even go out and buy a hardcover or paperback to try to make payment in the best way they know how, and then scan or find another copy of the e-book. But a lot just don't buy the ebooks, or will never buy a DRM book.)

But this thread is to share what's cool about the iLiad! Who likes it because of the big screen? The touch screen? The potential for multiple implementations of various reader software for a broad range of formats? To write your own software for it? To see more e-book hardware companies to be successful? There's a lot of reasons to like this device, so tell us why you like it!

I love my iLiad, because it has made my commute to work that much easier.

I don't have to remember to grab 1 or 2 books, as I'm leaving (I can set-up a week or 2 in advance) and the screen doesn't give me a headache after half an hour.

The iLiad is less bulky overall than carrying 2 books about (less bulky than 1 for the really thick books). I'm now up to my 25th book (started this morning)

The big screen with better resolution than the competitor (if i would think of the Sony Reader and the iLiad adressing the same market) is for sure a advantage.

The touch screen?
Has potential, but needs calibration for sure.

Is clearly an advantage. But you would need the SDK or the will of publishers to write readers.

That would need the SDK. Well, I think you all know about that.

Like I said elsewhere:
The Sony Reader is a "toy" you can play with now, you have all accessories you need (Connect-Store with DRMed books), the iLiad is like a "bag of LEGO bricks" here, but currently it's like they are glued together, so you can't change the form to somwthing you would like to.

I don't have a better idea of how I could say that.

I think there's one sentence to describe how i feel about the iliad:

I'm waiting for university lectures to start again so i can spend my 1.5h every day commuting with my iliad.

Actually i hoped that the SDK is available in september so i can get a news fetcher, but i guess manybooks offers enough books to read until then. (that's the purpose wlan would have for me) (and shakespeare is really great reading, i'm beginning to understand)

It will be really interesting to see how well the iliad works with lecture scripts. Most are prepared for A4 printing, but typesetted with LaTeX. That means i will try to bug my profs into releasing a A5 version or giving me the LaTeX source.

Working annotations on scripts would be great, too.

Other things... Note-taking works quite well when rotating it 180° for me, so it was possible for me to make some small sketches in cases i wanted to communicate something to someone else online. (but it's quite annoying. drawing, removing the sd card, putting it in the card reader, uploading it to my server, linking to the url - this might be improved by implementing a push mechanism for the iliad what shouldn't be a problem with a working SDK)

And *maybe* we can use the USB one day for more things then mass storage and 5v power supply. Then it's getting really interesting.

Anyway, i love my iliad already now. And even more for the possibilities it will offer in the future.

Dodge this, Sony reader.

Device: Iliad, dude!
Why I love my Iliad, from Ali the SCNR: I love my Iliad because it has a large screen that is not clobbered up with things (like the status bar on the Sony - that's space your wasting there, guys!) It runs for ages - I keep it in my backpack, read in the train to and from my work (thats 1.5h, per tour!), and just have to plug in the lightweight power chord every sunday or so. Thanks to arivero's IliNas program (download it from openiliad.org, dudes!), it will automatically start its WLAN connectivity when on power, and I can download and upload content over WebDAV, SMB and NFS - works like a charm! I can even plug my USB harddrive into the Iliad and it will serve that content over WLAN, too! (I guess I lost my USB cable after a PDF presentation I gave at some conference lately... Doesn't matter, but stupid, isn't it?)

All I want is this: First, we should speed up with improving our antialiasing algorithm in libfreetype for xpdf - it already looks so much better, just the right-to-left for hebrew is missing! And I want the german bicycle club to release bike maps around berlin, because IliadOnTour 0.1 was just released and I still have a compact flash GPS card!

ali...this time you really made me nervous...I was just getting ready to "copy and paste" the openiliad.org address...:-)
I thought I had missed some kind of über-hack you guys found that enables dev-work without the SDK...^^

Note: Mine is a bit of copy-and-paste from the review I posted on Irex's shop.

... I am very, very pleased with it; no eyestrain at all, and I can read wherever I want: sofa, kitchen, out in the sun... I look forward to the day when I can read my local newspaper on it!

... Perfect screen size for books, the same area as a typical paperback, but with the added benefit of choosing your most comfortable font size...

I also do a lot of sudokus, and the iLiad is perfect for that sort of thing (crosswords, etc.), allowing me to scribble in and then erase whatever I need, and never wasting paper or having to buy crossword magazines. I've tried the note taking, and the trial version of MyNotes, very impressive, and useful. All in all, I am in love with my little reader.

... The menus are very simple, and most functions are intuitive and easy to learn. The flip bar for turning pages is incredibly comfortable to handle, you can hold the iLiad and flip with one hand, holding your coffee or cigarrette (all three can be a bit much, hehe) in the other!

My iLiad is my second-best friend. I take it nearly everywhere with me. It is light and comfortable in my hands and easy on my old eyes.

I often read into the early hours (a great benefit of being retired) because it don't always matter what time I get up the next day. This is a great joy to me.

I don't even mind converting to PDF but I am really looking forward to the time when my iLiad will be able to flow RTF and HTML to my satisfaction.
