I'm with Amjbrown on this. Had the 600 for a little bit and could not get past the screen degradation as compared to the 505.

I had the 600 for a while till it broke (a whole other thread!) and I bought a used 505 off eBay. I wouldn't go back to the 600 now. The 600 is good if you have strong lighting, but if you're by a window and the light from the window is facing you then all you'll see on the 600 screen is yourself. This requires behavioural changes in order to read the book - you find youself moving and sitting at odd angles to read.
Having said that, it is faster than the 505 and the dictionary is good! I would look for a Wacom touch screen with stylus so that the touch screen digitiser is below the e-ink screen! Bebook Neo for example. |

I would love to have the touch layer below the e-ink, but I wouldn't give it up for finger touching. The only thing I hate about the finger touching is, that you get smudges on the display (mostly the right upper corner for bookmarking in my case). But this solely depends on what plans you have with your reader. In my case it's bookmarking, zooming in pdfs and page turning.

I have both.
I still prefer the 505 for reading, but my vision is quite bad and the screen clarity makes a big difference. Even on the 505, I have to crank up the font to the Large size on most books. The 600 has great features and I don't find the glare a problem at all. I do find it harder to read at small font sizes than the 505, but I crank the font up and it's no problem. You could also consider a 300, which has the clarity of the 505 and is just a little smaller. Last edited by doreenjoy; 03-13-2010 at 03:54 AM. |

Guys,
thanks to everyone for your comments. In the end I decided to try the PRS-600 and I ordered it on eBay. Now the waiting started... In the meantime I'm back to my PSP |

PSP is great. Just not really for books. Otherwise, really great!

So, I got my PRS-600 some weeks ago:
at first I was happy with the new features. The dictionary is really great for an Italian who likes reading books in English, and the notes and highlighting are nice too. But the differences in contrast and mainly the glare are really disappointing. So I cannot decide if I should keep it or try to sell it and go for a new one. I still miss my 505 ![]() |

Really sorry to hear that Wordcrasher, but not surprised.
I sold mine, and have allocated the proceeds to my iPad fund. Just waiting for them to land in the UK. Luckily I hadn't sold my 505, so I reverted to that for the long wait. Good luck in whatever you choose to do amjb |

I still have my 505. Currently my wife is using it. I guess it depends on what you expect. You said you ordered the 600 on eBay, so your expectations were obviously different to your real world experience.
I had the chance to check out the 600 before I bought it and I knew how it compared to the 300 right beside it in the store. So for me (as I was eager for the extra features) it was a no brainer. Sorry to hear that the 600 doesn't meet your expectation. Like I said, despite the worse readability, I think the 600 is quite great for an ereader. |
