This is not about laziness.
This is about how desperate you are ;-)

Don't hate yourself. Shortly after getting my 505 I came home from a trip and had a similar calamity. Upon arriving home I went to the back of my van to get out my suitcase. I looked up to see that our family room window was broken. Seems a ruffed grouse tried to fly through it as I found said bird under the window. After cleaning up the broken glass, and the cause of the broken glass, I realized I needed to move the van to allow my wife to get into the garage. I jumped in and promply backed over my suitcase, which was still sitting on the driveway behind the van. You guessed it, I destroyed my month old, much loved 505.

Fortunately it was still under warranty and replaced. My replacement quickly received a nice M-Edge cover and in the end all turned out ok, even though I hated myself for quite awhile. It's tough when the only person to blame is staring back at you in the mirror.

I hope things turn out well for you. I can certainly feel you pain.

Three days ago, I bought secondhand prs-505 and I accidentally dropped my prs-505 less than a foot high. And it happened to me. Screen was cracked.
I was so sad that couldn't sleep. :-(

I'll repost this from another thread I did, hope it helps. I suggest you play around with both landscape and horizontal conversions, both epub and lrf, until you find settings you like:

I bought my PRS-505 over a year ago, love it. The screen recently cracked in the luggage coming back from a trip (the cover was of no help). The top half of the screen is now worthless, but I noticed the bottom half was unaffected. Installing a replacement screen from Sony seems to be the price of a new Kindle. I was going to sell it for scrap on ebay when it I remembered that Calibre has detailed margin settings for ebook coversions. So...

After messing around I found that a 150 pt top margin (0 margins on the side and bottom) converting to epub, with no other setting changes, gives me an entirely legible half-page read in small font. Of course I have to flip pages twice as often but oh well. I get the exact same number of lines (15) as I do on my Palm T3, so I am used to it. Another benefit is that I can use a portable reading light at the top and point it right at the text without any glare issue--the glare is on the worthless top half.

=( My condolences. I think the screen is more prone to break from strain (like bending and different pressures on different areas on the screen) than from shock (fall). The hand-to-concrete fall was also a scenario that happened to me and it was ok.
