Paper-based books don't have touchscreens or keyboards either, and take up a heckuva lot more room in the travel bag. I got my K2 specifically because I travel and was tired of packing a half-dozen paperbacks. When I got mine I was surprised to find how many free books are available in all types of genres. Add Calibre to the mix and I can load my home town newspaper for free from my laptop and an internet connection each day while I travel. The only downside from my view is the K2 is not ideal for pdf documents due to the screen size, but I really don't have a need to read pdf docs so this isn't a deal breaker to me.

I find my K2 works very well for what I need and I don't expect to ever go back to paper.

2) It doesn't have page numbers for the books like everything else published in the last 5 centuries
3) It has a teeny tiny keyboard instead of a touch screen like half a million phones manage to have
4) I can't read PDF documents (not the way they look on a PC anyway)
5) It's not a reading device it's a Amazon e-book selling device
6) I've got a PC (4, in fact) and a BB. I don't NEED another wireless device.
7) Searching for a "free" e-book on Amazon is frustrating. I don't want to read romance or "undiscovered" authors or born-again.

I figure I can sell this thing on Craigslist and for $200 get enough used paperbacks to last me until they come out with something truly useful.

Please convince me otherwise.
The fact that you call your Kindle "a thing" leads me to believe the Kindle is not for you. You should look for a reader that fits your reading style and needs.

The even better news, for fans of pulp fiction, is that a lot IS available for the Kindle, for free no less, at www.munseys.com.

because I teach skiing part time when I'm not busted up. many ski lift rides are long and after the first 25 times or so, looking at the same tree is boring. there are also frequent stops due to falls and mechanical issues. I can whip my kindle out and read right until the point that I need to raise my ski tips to disembark. I flop it closed, hold it until I get to the spot where I tighten my boots, adjust my poles and clothing and secure my kindle then I'm off with tons of formerly wasted time having become recovered reading time!

MOST people don't come in here with such a cup on their shoulder demanding that WE justify their actions; ie keeping or discarding a reading device. MOST people come in here all excited and wriggling like puppies wanting to learn everything they can about the new marvel they are holding.

YMMV

I am not confident enough about my skiing to risk my beautiful Kindle. Broken ribs heal (3 at one time) but what would I do without my Kindle?

I think what most pissed *ME* off was his attitude that it was up to everyone else to somehow 'justify' his keeping the Kindle. Say what?!? It was a *GIFT*! That means it didn't cost him *ANYTHING*! (Insert obligatory 'gift horse' aphorism here.)

IOW, he could have stomped it into a million pieces and not taken any fiscal damage. Or, he could have taken the time to learn to appreciate the feature set of the *GIFT* he received. Instead, he came here and pretty much demanded that total strangers pander to him by 'proving the worth' of the Kindle. Say what!?!

Yeah. I hope he stays around too, because ebook readers - especially Kindles - are wonderful things. But I'm not going to do his homework for him.

I wear a camelbak and there is a slot between the reservoir container and the back that I can slide it. it's a pretty well cushioned area and not one that normally is damaged in falls.

Oh, my husband wears one of those when he bicycles. Of course, he shouldn't read then. But he could read while he waits for the ambulance!

Ditto. It was honest questions, and I read nothing in them that should have provoked anyone. It's questions I hear from people who've never used an e-book reader, and may not have much of an idea what to do with one. What - potentially - better than to ask people who actually use them and like them?

It was less the questions than the attitude. He very much came across as snearing at the benefits and features of the gift he had received - and expected total strangers to provide him with some shred of reason to NOT continue snearing at this gift. Y'know, when *I* receive a gift worth $260, *I* express joy at receiving it.

The vibe, I got was completely opposite. I found the post to be negative from the title with the "thumbs down" icon to nearly every item on the list.

The only neutral statements I saw were:

-"I got a Kindle as a gift."
-"I've got a PC (4, in fact) and a BB."

I didn't get the feeling of "help me learn how to use this device" or "is there a way that I can... (fill in the function you need)". I would have jumped all over trying to help them if I had felt they really wanted help.

I agree with rlparker and Ea; I thought the OP was venting their own frustration more than anything else.
