re.: I figure the more vegans and vegetarians avoid meat the more meat left for me to eat - IOW, thanks for eliminating yourselves from the competition for my meals!

Is that really necessary? it's hard enough for a vegan/vegetarian to live in a world where the majority of people aren't aware and/or don't care how there products and food are produced but the guy wants a vegan sleeve for his Kindle, that's all this discussion should be about.

You're absolutely right about needing to keep the discussion on topic! And I'm quite glad that the OP found a source of vegan cases/sleeves/pouches.

I was just pointing out that the brevity of the thread title could easily lead to rather humorous interpretations. And, excuse me for pointing out the logical, but I've yet to see a grocery store that didn't have a *well*-stocked veggies and fruits section - the same cannot be said for most 'natural food' stores. Doesn't bode well for support for your claims of 'hard enough' - just saying.

This one looked like a great environmentally friendly cover, but I'm not sure if that glossy material is leather? A shame if it is, kind of destroys the environmentally friendly aspect of the cover.

re: Doesn't bode well for support for your claims of 'hard enough' - just saying

My point is not to the availability of fruits and vegetables. The availability of them doesn't do much to help cause the suffering of animals in the world or to be more specific for this discussion, the horrors of the leather industry. The person who started this discussion is trying to buy a "cruelty free" product so making light of the slaughter of animals is just out of line. Whatever the case we can both agree let's have this thread get back on topic, thanks.

This is OT

When I eat meat, the animal is already dead - very dead!

If no one in the world ate meat or meat products, all our so-called meat animals (cows, sheep, goats etc) would become extinct.

The animals these days are not subject to cruelty, when slaughtered - the law requires this to be done humanely.

If all animals should be living in the wild, we couldn't keep cats, dogs, birds etc...

Where does the cruelty end?

Not true, sadly.

Personally , I'm in favour of buying products that don't involve (or at least reduce) cruelty to others.

You know... All I really wanted to do was point out that the way the OP phrased his title to the thread was, inadvertently I'm sure, funny. I really don't have any problem with vegans and vegetarians being such. Could we stop

I ended up going with JAVOedge's tweed cover. Thanks all for the replies.

We should keep this thread alive somewhat though so if someone else is looking for vegan-friendly covers we can have a host of options posted up here. I just wish we could change the headline to something like "vegan ebook covers" to be more generalized.

JAVOedge, by the way, offers covers for most ereaders (as well as iPods and the like).

And as far as the OT posts go - Wow, I was not trying to start an argument. I was just looking for some suggestions for cruelty-free cases. I still fail to see how I worded the title wrong but I guess it's all about interpretation, isn't it?

All I'll say as far as the OT arguments go is this: no matter the case all animal-based food, clothing, Kindle cases, etc. involve cruelty. There are no well-enforced laws concerning humane tactics of slaughter. I am loathe to post it because it's horrible but this video perfectly illustrates the conditions in most slaughterhouses.

And, by the way, the amount of fruits and vegetables in a grocery store doesn't matter. Man (even vegans) cannot survive on vegetables and fruit alone. You still have read labels as far as everything goes. There are milk-derivatives and/or egg in nearly everything these days. It's not easy to stick to your guns most of the time. Add to that the fact that I have two children and you have an entirely new headache.

I'm not bitching, mind you, I just feel like since I started this I needed to weigh in. Now get back on-topic dammit!

runfromfire, the tweed component in that cover might perhaps be made of wool. You may need to email JAVOedge to inquire about this.

Really? If you read Derek's post, he explains it. Honestly, it's a simple joke, but it still made me giggle. Unfortunately, it seems many people didn't fully read his post, and jumped on him for being rude and insensitive, when he was just pointing out some silliness.

Hi, you're probably right, we probably didn't read the full post, maybe it's just not the right thread for it. I don't think a lot of people realize what goes into creating the products they use on a daily basis, especially when it involves animal products. Animals are routinely skinned alive (much more often than people realize) for their hides to make leather, so that's why it can be a sensitive issue to many. I'm glad this conversation found it into the forum though and no hard feelings. Thanks.

Actually, I *do* have a good idea of what goes into making the products I use. A: I'm a hunter and fisher. B: I've worked leather and have worked at slaughtering. C: I've worked in product manufacturing. If anyone thinks that the occasional case of animal cruelty is bad (and while numerically the amounts of animals live-skinned is high, the percentage is infinitismally small - although that in *no way* excuses live-skinning - I prefer and seek out any leather products I use be from dead-skinned animals) D: Each and every one of those "no animals harmed" products is far worse for the planet in both the short and long run - which is why I fully support every private-sector effort to move manufacturing industry into space; mining and manufacturing done in orbit or in the asteroids - no matter how expensive - is far less harmful to this home of ours.

I'm not sure I follow, how would a cotton Kindle cover be worse for the planet than a leather one?
