That's true... I never had an issue with my Palm going through security. Maybe I'll just leave it in my purse. And I'm usually pretty easy going, so if we do get stopped by TSA, I shouldn't have any trouble with that. We'll be plenty early, so won't have to feel rushed. Who knows... if they ask me about it maybe I can convince them they all need a Pocket Pro!

Oh, and we don't have a DS, or anything like that. My kids are pretty low tech. Although my youngest recently got something called an iCarly in her McDonald's happy meal, and she was pretty excited about that! I love it when they are entertained by simple things!

Do not forget that planes carry coloring books and crayons for children. Just ask the Stewardess for something to entertain your kids with.

The Pocket PRO is not a computer and needs no special bin or anything at all going through security. I leave mine "on" all the time and never turn it off anyway.

Enjoy your flight and relax!!
Thanks, Robert! That's good to know. I'll probably just leave it in my purse, then. And I didn't realize they sometimes have coloring books for kids on the flights. I'll have to ask about that! Thanks!

My understanding is that there is nothing really going on electronically if you aren't turning a page, and I think of a keyboard lock as "off."

I left the PP in my backpack or my coat pocket during screening, no problem there. TSA can do, by their own rules, anything they wish, but unless they say to specifically put all electronic devices in a tub, I see no reason to. It doesn't look like a computer, after all.
I don't think I could read during take off or landing, because come to think of it, sometimes I get a bit sick to my stomach during that part of the flight. But from what everyone here says, keyboard lock should do it. Thanks!

Thanks again for all your replies! This is such a great forum! And I'm really looking forward to the trip. So are my girls! And I can't wait to show my Mom my new pretty Pocket Pro!

I had the same question before the first time I flew with an ebook reader. I've flown with my PocketPro and my Cybook Gen3 and never been asked to remove either one from my bag.

The last couple of flights I've taken, the flight attendants made a point of saying "Anything with an off button needs to be OFF." To me, that means completely powering down my smartphone and PocketPro. I read the in-flight magazine or do tatting until the plane reaches altitude.

Once I'm reading it, as Bob already said, the flight attendants tend to be fascinated with it (also with my tatting) and ask lots of questions, so be prepared with your Ebook Evangelization Spiel!

The last time I flew, I had a round tube with quarters and pennies in it for souvenir pressed penny machines, and I forgot to take it out of my bag before putting it through the x-ray. They pulled me out of line to do a full search of my suitcase, but they just went through it looking for the roll of coins, which no doubt had a suspicious appearance on the x-ray, and never said a word about my PP.

What's tatting? My first thought was something to do with tattoos, but I can't imagine being able to do that on a plane. *l*

Tatting is a method of making lace. It is very portable. I use plastic Clover shuttles, so they don't even register on the x-ray. I also crochet lace, but they don't make plastic hooks in the size I use, so tatting is just easier to take when flying.

You do know about Lacis in Berkley http://www.lacis.com/ ?
They have Wood and Bone hooks unless you are into the really small sizes.

Oh yes. Many packages from Lacis have winged their way across the country to Chez Mags. I would love to go to the Lace Museum someday. And yes, I do use the really small hooks. They only come in steel varieties, unfortunately, and they're so thin and sharp I could see TSA confiscating them as weapons; I have to use a thimble on the middle finger of my left hand when I crochet with them to keep from cutting up my finger. They make some that have plastic handles but the hooks are still steel.

Agreed, You don't have to pull the ebook Reader out and your bag. I just got back in town after a trip. Somewhere I noticed a sign (don't remember where) but there is criteria for what has to come out of the bag and be examined separately. I always wondered why they never said a lot about all the electronics I typically carry.

Tuesday was the first day I got stopped. And the TSA agent said it was it was because there was so much stuff they couldn't figure out what was in there (she later apologized for saying "stuff").

When she started pulling "stuff" out of my laptop bag I had to agree. Pocket PC, Viliv S5, Archos 5IT, Pocket Pro, and assorted cables and adapters.

Dear wpeace:

I agree. My wife, working for TSA, told me how difficult it is to look in omn the display when your bag goes through. It is horrible. Is it a bomb or is it harmless jumbles of electronics.

I think we all need to be aware of how DIFFICULT it is to make a split-second decision. Give the people on those lines a break! It is brutal having to decide and it is better to check than not to check!! Put yourself into trying to decide.

I have learned to respect the difficulty and stop complaining.

Is that even possible on an airplane anymore? Mind yew, my flying days are over, but I sure did log a LOT of time in the air back in the 90's! I flew round trip about every weekend.

Of course, flying was different back then. It actually WAS enjoyable because we didn't have all those goofy laws and restrictions we have now. The few times I do fly nowadays, I find I long for the olden days when it was not such a hassle! I also look out the window from above now and wonder if I am to be blown up at any second. Didn't have THAT problem back then, either.

I am very grateful that my days flying were not like they are now. Back when I was flying, it was fun. Nowdays, it is more hassle and even frightening than anything else.
