It is $14.99 under iPhone Apps - ebooks - enhanced editions. If you open up iTunes and search on Kim Harrison you will see it listed, not the audio version that is $30+... down the screen a little bit there is a section for enhanced eBooks.

This is a webpage I found about it
http://www.enhanced-editions.com/boo...agic-sanction/

I can't tell you much more than that because I haven't actually bought it.

Oh I just saw on iTunes, there is a 2nd eBook/App that is just the first chapter that you can download for free. I'm going to try it out.

A pirated ebook is already floating around.

You wouldn't be able to, you would need to buy the hardback if you didn't want to wait. Just like you would have had to wait for the paperback in ye olden dayes.

Publishers have always put out cheaper versions of their books when sales drop off on the higher priced editions. There's no real reason for that to change now.

okay - I looked and listened to the sample and have a couple of thoughts.

1. HarperCollins delays the Kindle/Nook/Sony etc eBook because of low pricing. I think Amazon priced this around $9 and I'm sure the other stores were similar.

2. Meanwhile - they send a production crew out to Kim Harrison's office and film some of those "enhanced version" extras ... interviews with her about the process o putting the book together. BTW, this all looks pretty cool. I personally really don't listen to audiobooks and I don't care all that much about author interviews but many people are really going to like this enhanced eBook product.

3. They bundle the eBook with the Audiobook (and I'm talking the real audiobook here, not a Kindle like Text To Speech .. the REAL audiobook with a performer reading) that syncs to your reading of the ebook on you iPod/iPhone. The exact same audiobook sells on iTunes for $30 and is included for free with your "enhanced eBook" on iTunes.

4. and they sell all this for $14.99 on the iTunes site in February ...let me repeat that, $14.99 for the eBook plus audiobook while on the other side of their face they are trying to explain to their customers that Amazon and all must be stopped from selling the eBook alone for $9 because such an atrocity will end publishing as we know it and that is why they won't release those eBooks for another 6 weeks????

It has suddenly become very clear to me that this whole "eBook battle" has nothing to do with the evils of subsidized pricing or windowing or the true costs of publishing an eBook. What we are looking at is Publisher hatred toward Amazon and at least in this case a clear signal that HarperCollins has jumped firmly into the bed of Steve Jobs in an effort to knock Amazon off the eBook King of the Hill position.

Nothing against Kim Harrison in this whole thing. She appears very gracious and understanding on her blog and website in regards to the upset of the eBook readers who feel betrayed. She is kind of the "anti Douglas Preston" if you will.

Nah, to me it isn't that they're going after Amazon and siding with Apple. Note that these enhanced ebooks are not compatible with the iPad's library system. I just see it as the publishers giving the finger to all ebook sellers, and doing something that they have near complete control over, and get a much larger chunk of the profit.

The enhanced edition is great! It is worth it (can go back and forth between ebook and reading). It's $15. The interviews are interesting. It is well put together. Well worth it.

Also, I have jailbroken my phone and found that it is just an unencrypted ePub at heart...

And if you don't even have an iPone/iPod touch, who cares? Just buy and download the app in iTunes, unpack the .ipa file (it's just a zip archive!) and navigate to the B.M. Sanction 1.0.1 1/Payload/BlackMagicSanction.app/book directory...

Zip up the contents of the OEBPS folder, and import into calibre...

If you want to listen to the audiobook, head to the media/audio_book directory...

Oh, and it's actually a pretty decent ebook too, much nicer than many other efforts I have seen.

But why should you have to buy the hardback? Sorry, but that sounds silly to me. Release the eBook at the same time as the hardback, and price it similarly to it (perhaps slightly lower), then lower the price of the eBook when the paperback is released.

potentially misleading as it is a stand alone app it should work fine on the iPad, however yes it wouldn't sit within the ibooks app.

The same reason the paperback doesn't come out at the same time as the hardback. Fewer people would buy the hardback. I don't think variable prices for ebooks would work given the number of different places that sell them.

Ebook prices already have a great deal of variance ... whether it is based on different platforms (eReader, Mobi, or Lit) or different club rewards and memberships, or just different pricing schemes.
