Your advise is good - try to buy EPUB. I don't think you'll be able to buy an EPUB book on Amazon, although there are ways around it (lots of elbow grease).
BTW, why do you convert to LRF from EPUB? I'm new to Sony readers (PRS-900 is my first) and I don't have any complaints with EPUB.

I've found that EPUBs work better than LRFs (they load faster).
