Just saw this, sorry you're having problems...and you were so happy with it

The soft reset seems to be more than just pressing reset, I found after my last freeze:
While pressing reset with the stylus, you also keep the on/off switch pressed for a few seconds, then release both and press the on/off switch again. No chanting or dancing required. Sorry for the superfluous info if you've already done all that, it's just that I only found out recently that that's the way to do it.

If nothing else helps, ask your retailer to exchange it for a new one. You've only had it for a few days after all.

Good luck and let us know.

I had a similar screen freezing problem last night, and here's what I did to fix it. I found these instructions somewhere online but I don't remember where so this is just from memory.

Starting with the Reader disconnected from computer:

Step 1: Hold down reset for a few seconds.
Step 2: Slide power switch to turn on.
Step 3: IMMEDIATELY plug in the usb cable to connect to computer before the Reader can go through the rebooting process.

I had to try this a few times to get the timing right, but on about the 3rd try I got the "USB connected" screen. I don't know if this will fix your particular problem, but I figured I might as well suggest it. Good Luck!

Oh No!

I had weird things like this happen with my 505 once. It was because the battery was drained. I let it charge for a few hours. Did a manual reset and soft reset and it came back.

Welcome to MR, Castor and thank you for making your first post be one to help someone.

When I saw your instructions, I remembered where I saw it. It was what some were calling a "brick" and I found the same instructions in MR's Wiki under Sony 505.

Quote:
Recovering a brick

Note: Some have reported that this does not work. You may need to return your reader to Sony.

1. You're stuck at "Reader starting up"
2. Paperclip the reset button then slide the power toggle.
3. When the screen goes blank, quickly connect the PC usb cable.
The Reader should reboot and show the USB connect in a minute or so, then you can use the Sony Updater to reflash your Reader.
Kevin, I hope this works and Karma to you, Castor, for being so willing to jump in and post a possible solution for Kevin. EDIT: oops have to wait until my Karma button lets me give some out.

Good luck with it. If you do a search on here (you may have already done so) you will see a lot of us had difficulties with freezing in the first few weeks of our PRS600 ownership. The solutions seemed quite random, what worked for some didn't work for others. All I can recommend is that you try random combinations of the reset button and the on/off slide. Alternatively you could try to mimic a hard reset which is described elsewhere (the instructions reference turning it on/off which obviously you can't do but you could try the other elements of it and see what happens). What worked for me was (a) pressing reset several times in a row in rapid succession and then sliding the power toggle, (b) taking out the micro sd card and never ever putting it back in again. Haven't had a problem with freezing since but before then it froze multiple times on me in a short space of time.

Croaked!!

My 600 just bit the dust. Two and a half months. Touch screen stopped working. Reset, Hard reset, re-format. Now can't get past the calibration screen. Checked Sony's web site and I'm eligible for a refurbished unit. Wow. That makes me warm and fuzzy. O well, my fault, almost $400.00 done the drain. This was a gift and to make it even better, my wife purchased it at Best Buy.

Sorry for the rant, it's midnight and and I've spent the last five hours trying to breath life into this. Tomorrow, I'll find out how to swap it for a working model.

So they want me to send back the OLD one, and Pay a second time at full price, for One Reader,

Ummmmh Now why Don't I fancy that Idea ???

My Reply,

"Hi,

I'm a little confused by your reply, You expect me to pay AGAIN to replace Faulty goods ?

Under the Sale of Goods Act, etc I believe I am entitled to a free replacement or Full Refund,

I do want a replacement, but if you are refusing to do this, then I require a full refund as the goods are faulty and not of saleable quality.

I anxiously await your response,

Regards "

They are Kidding Right ???
