No, Apple wants to get an ipad in everyones homes. They will open the same Apps that are on the iphone as long as they work properly and they get their 30% cut.
Except 30% of nothing is... nothing.

Then please, enlighten me. Are you saying that Apple is going to require 30% of the purchase price of out-of-band purchases as a condition for allowing iPad versions of B&N eReader/Kindle? The same 30% that will be the entirety of the retailers' take come 1 April 2010?

Apple takes 30% from developers who sell paid apps in the App Store. We assume that the same will be true of authors who publish in iBooks.

Since Apple is not providing the framework for the B&N reader app or the Kindle app, they don't get a cut of the sales from those apps.

Which was the point I was trying to make with my "30% of nothing is nothing" post. So I'm still not enlightened as to why Donnageddon thinks my prognostication is fuzzy.

Post withdrawn. I get it now. I believe you are correct. The apps discussed are free, and 30% of free is nothing.

Never mind.

If they do -- that would be a MAJOR turnoff to me.

I have a related question to this. If you buy locked music from an other site, can you use it on an iPod?

No. The only DRM that the iPod supports is the Fairplay DRM. There are two other DRMs that I know of for music (probably more) and they are Plays For Sure which was used for protected windows media files and Zune which is proprietary to Zune. They use it for Zune pass... purchased songs from the Zune store are DRM free.

That said... you can buy any music you want DRM free these days. So I'm not sure why you are asking the question.

I'm trying to compare functionalities that the iPad does. Music/books.

Your answer tells me that although it is possible to bring Amazon books on the iPad it is very unlikely that one would be able to read them directly on the iBooks reader software without some conversion process and drm removal. So I don't see the comfort of using the Amazon libraries directly to the iPad. The function design and user interface of iBooks is what makes the iPad a worthy reader. So you're better off working translations from your Amazon host computer than on the iPad itself. But that would be my personal preference unless there is something else I don't yet see.

I would agree with that. Although, I'm not sure of the downside... especially if you have a Kindle and have built up a decent size Kindle library.

Of course, if you aren't new to eBooks this is pretty much true of any library you might have built up of DRMed ebooks... whether at the Sony store, fictionwise.com, BooksOnBoard.com, eReader.com or Kobo also.

At least you keep access to pretty much any of these libraries with the iPad and the correct software... Either Kindle for iPad or B&N Reader for iPad, or txtrReader.. (we hope a better app will come that supports Adobe DRM than txtR.

See my comment above for the "comfort" or reason you would use the Kindle App or other rather than iBooks.

Are those reading softwares pleasing to use? Are they as well adapted on the iPad than as on an iPhone? I would hate to use that in just a tiny window especially since iBooks looks so great!
I guess we have to wait and see.

I am pretty sure both Amazon and B&N have announced iPad specific versions of their apps.

But... your the one getting and iPad... so I await your reviews of these apps.

Highly unlikely that I review anything on the three fronts. First I'm a Sony user, that takes care of the reader software, and then the iPad will not be in Canada before the end of april. I want the 3G and who will be the provider is as today a total mystery. I don't think it probable that I get my iPad before june. By then loads of reviews will be out...
I've always wished to write a review but I'm never at the right place at the right time...

Probably not. Then again, you can't use locked music on any device it's not licensed for.

So you burn your locked music to a cd, then rip that cd to mp3 -- THEN copy it to your iPad.
