I can't open PDF files with Chinese file names in Acrobat 5.0 (I know it works in later versions, but it is too expensive to upgrade and 5.0 works fine for my needs) and SoPDF.
This is really no problem on the Irex, since you can have an English filename and Chinese meta data. That works fine for me. All the PDF files open fine and can be read. You can edit the meta data in Calibre and then send the file to the device. |

If the pdf/epub files are renamed as English words, there are no issues to open and display the file contents. The interesting thing is the txt file with Chinese name can be opened and displayed without any problems as long as the txt is saved as UTF-8 format and Chinese fonts are installed already.

If the pdf/epub files are in a Chinese named directory, these files also can not be opened even they have English names.
All the related issues did not happen on iLiad and DR1000s. Last edited by Opensesame; 04-01-2010 at 06:03 AM. |

Well, this seems more like the Adobe RM SDK problem. And I don't think you can freely download the SDK.
Anyway, this is just a "nice to have" feature. I can write a program to automatically change the Chinese characters in the filename into English/Pinyin when copying to DR800. |

In the upcoming 2.0 release, we will show filenames instead of metadata title in the 'SD Card' (folder) view.

Matthijs, hopefully there is an option to switch between filename and metadata in SD Card view. Since DR800 cannot open non-english filenamed PDF/ePub, it would be very weird to show these filenames when they are converted to ASCII.

This only applies to the folder view, in which it makes sense to show filenames, not metadata. All other views are unaffected. |

Matthijs, I tried to open a file with a simplified Chinese name and it didn't open. Renamed it and it worked fine. 异界散仙.pdf, You can try copy and paste. I have Chinese fonts installed on the reader.

The file opens fine on my 2.0 development build. Must have been a bug which was solved.

It's great.
Matthijs, Could you please explain to us what is folder view and what are other views? For folder view, does it mean to enter the "SD Card" folder and its sub folders from Home? For other views, do they mean to enter the folders like Books/News/Images/... directly from Home? thanks |

The DR has two types of views:
1. The 'tag' view which is displayed like a flat list. Examples: Books, News, Images, Personal Documents. These are accessible directly from Home. All files classified as a Book end up in Books, even if they are outside the 'Books' folder on disk. 2. The folder view (SD Card icon) is displayed as you normally see it on a computer: showing all folders and files on the SD card. |
