I'm a Traditional Chinese user and using an European version of iLiad. As I can embed fonts in a PDF document to read Chinese, I think it doesn't matter to possess an European version. What's more, after converting my documents / ebooks to PDF, I can scribble on them on the iLiad.
And the most important point is that it is much cheaper to buy from Europe, and I can request for the developer's package in order to install other third party softwares. |

yeah but I'm in China now, so more likely to end up with a Chinese model. I want to make sure that buying a Chinese model won't cost me functionality that the European model has. The other thread seems to suggest that the Chinese version is locked into an IDS server that prohibits it from doing something that the European model can do.
Also, in terms of fonts, I'm not a fan of PDF's, and even if I was I don't want to have to convert every document to PDF. I'd much rather have built in support for Chinese fonts. |

also, I see that the 9,000 kuai price posted in this thread was in 2006, ... I'm assuming/hoping the price for an iliad in China isn't still that high?

I order the iLiad online for about USD$770 (including shipping fees), and it was mailed to HK within a week. If it is true that the iLiad costs USD1,100 in China, that means the Chinese fonts support costs you $330... You may consider whether it is worth.
I read from the Chinese forum that you cannot obtain shell access for a Chinese iLiad, and that the 2nd Edition is not yet available in China. You'd better check it out before spending the money: http://www.irexreader.cn/ |

ah, I found that it's sold on taobao.com for 5800 kuai, about 800 USD... so an extra hundred bucks being in China.
I also see that taobao has the hanlin v3's for cheaper than jinke is willing to sell them for in China. wow what terrible web design. |

Remember to check whether it is the 2nd Edition... It is meaningless to buy an older version with similar price!

Oh...the Asian version does not have the mobipocket reader installed. Think twice if you want to use this program (I use it frequently...)

interesting. but someone said it's easy to switch to the european IDS server to? whatever the hell an ids server is... :-P.
How would I know if it was second edition? Are these sold in Japan anywhere? (maybe cheaper?) I might go make a trip to japan in a week or so. Maybe I should just pick up a used libre real cheap while I'm there. do those old ones totally suck or are they OK? I guess I'm in the wrong thread for that question. |

I think you have to contact the iRex headquarter to see if they have dealers in Japan. Do check other threads of the forum. There are tons of good information. |

What is extra to the Chinese version is that it supports Chinese font in text display, and also PDFs without embeded Chinese fonts. But they are not so much a big deal. I actually consider the Shell Acess a much more important feature for iLiad, which is still missing from its Chinese version. BTW, if anyone is seeking Chinese PDF content for iLiad, I've built a Wiki site to allow on-the-fly generation of such PDFs with embeded fonts. It's at http://www.inien.com. The site also supports PDFs for Sony reader and a few other e-book devices. |

Alanine. I am writing here to show my appreciation for the softwares you have created, in particular the one to turn on and off network. I found it to be extremely useful!
Good work for the inien.com website. By the way, how can I upload materials to your website for the convertion to PDFs? |

But often you want to create a new page under a new name, to do this you can first create a page link (the tutorial shows you how to do this) by editing either your own page or any of the existing pages, and then after save, you may click on the link to start editing it. I'd always hoped to improve the tutorial or even put a video tutorial to help new starters, but I don't have much time recently ![]() |

Then the only step is to get a Chinese TTF font, and copy it to the /home/root/.fonts/ directory on iLiad. Done. Reboot, and you have Chinese display for your Chinese file names (or meta data) in ContentLister. Only thing you need to be careful is that your TTF font should be small enough to be put on the root file system. As long as the truetype font is properly Unicode encoded, I believe you can use a Traditional Chinese font with no problem, but I've not tested this myself. Last edited by alanine; 01-28-2008 at 02:40 PM. Reason: the correct directory name shoudl be be /home/root/.fonts/ |
